Re:Nest too expensive for what it is
It's too cold? Override. Too hot? Override. In the end, the programmable thermostat reverts to a plain old one because no one can be bothered to reprogram the damn thing..
Damn straight! That's why I did this with my Honeywell!

My ProjectI did a major project like this at my house a few years back. Did a whole xmas light display with Linux, PIC, ethernet, etc. Still have it running [seasonally] to this day!!
Please feel free to check it out (along with design notes, videos, schematics, code, etc, at)

XMas Lights - Similar Design ExampleI used a similar PIC chip and the little I2C ethernet controller for a similar design to control my outside xmas lights.
It was a little bigger than a business card - but was able to dim 32 channels of AC power for my lighting strands. I Used 2 of these board to control all the lights.
All the lighting commands were pumpted to via. UDP packets from my Linux server - it was a pretty impressive display!

Re:Not the first one...
I'm quaking in my boots here.
Well, if your stupid and your stubborn, and your in the marines, you have an infinitely greater chance of killing yourself and others.
I admit I'm not quite sure what this means.
It just means make more money. If it's the only thing "paying" for the certificate, and not having the certificate is affecting his ability to make that $16-17/month, then make more off it or perhaps give it to public domain. Besides, he's a pilot, he spends more on fuel per flight than a Root CA costs per year - even a "green" one - and built a full sized flight sim in his basement. Last I check flight lessons run about $5-$9k per year. I even tried to find the $3 software he's talking about, but I'm not going to look that hard. (I didn't find it.) http://www.bradgoodman.com/
Education for users is what's needed here. The vast majority of web users don't know the difference between SSL and a CA's certificate or their arse and their elbow.
Agreed.

Mini-ITX and BladesIt's not quite a "shoebox" - but same principal. I made a 40-node Mini-ITX datacenter a few years back. Very cheap, low-power, cool (temperature), etc.
I still use one as my main server at home.

Challenge-And-Response
I am working on a project called Cartman, which is a PAM Challenge-and-Response authentication module for linux.
Its not as "good" as something like SSH, but has the benefit that you have to type the "challenge" into a PDA (Blackberry, Palm, etc) in order to get a response - so capturing keystrokes doesn't help.
The page isn't up yet, but will be at:
