Re:Unfortunate
When I've accidentally typed in an address wrong, I've been brought to a page with "premium" domains that a squatter is sitting on listing the prices for them. They were all pretty bland and stupid sites like a000.org or MedicMan.net but they listed the prices anywhere from $100 to $5,000. Unfortunately what you have to realize if you're going to make this offer is that they're doing this for those few times a year they strike it rich so it's probably going to be closer to $5,000 or more. If the site is like two last names or something readable, it's probably going to be pretty high cost. Far less than a court case you probably wouldn't win though.
The last thing you need to realize is that whatever money you give this guy is just going to fund him to buy up more domains and keep his hands on others longer. If you wanted to do the most conscious thing for the community, you would just find another domain and not give this scum one red cent.
Although I agree he shouldnt give him a cent why do you think they are scum?
We all make money one way or the other and this is as legit as any other job out there. Certainly nowhere the same league as spammers

I really hate domain squatters...I can relate completely to this point. Last month I wanted to register vaandering.com - so I waited, patiently until the domain expired. Then there's the extra 15 days or so where the original owner can get last dibs on the domain before it gets tossed back into the pile. Well I went on holidays and came back to seeing my domain REGISTERED again! Imagine my surprise when I see it registered to BuyDomains! A well-known domain squatting business. Now this is my legal name, whether or not they want to display it as vaandeRing.com - they're sole purpose is to try and make a quick grand off domains... Why heres the fine print if your interested in buying a domain from them...
By submitting this price request, I understand that the quoted price will be at least $1,000 and may be over $10,000. The quoted price is a fixed, one-time only fee that will be valid for 7 days. This is not an auction. I understand the pricing terms and am prepared to spend at least $1,000 for this domain.
Isn't this bordering on the illegal? Theres no way im paying $1000 to register my name, its absolutely rediculous, and they advertise that they have over 475,000 'quality' domain names. Good lord... -
Re:googlezon.com
I'm betting on Amoogle.com instead... and it's still available, too. Quick! First one to register it wins a free subscription to the New York Times!

Re:Some registrars will protect you
I've been using www.buydomains.com for some time now, and they are really good, and also really cheap ($16 a year). You can forward request to the domain name (including email) using their DNS, and in combination with www.no-ip.com it makes it possible for me to run a proffesionally looking web server from my home machine. They also have locking, I descovered after reading the article. And all of those features are included for in the basic package for free.

Address encrytption and excellent control panel
I have a number of domains registered with http://domaindiscover.com/ (also known as http://buydomains.com/). They have an excellent control panel, good prices, domain forwarding, URL forwarding, temp pages, parking, frame forwarding, accessible MX records, and last year they introduced the ability to encrpyt your registration email address in the whois database - this single act alone cut my spam by about 70%, and I'm very grateful to them. I have even had reason to speak with the company on one occasion, and dealt with a friendly, knowledgeable and helpful guy within seconds, who answered all my queries.

God dammit.
I love seeing this kind of precident set, but I hate the fact that there are undoubtedly a couple of lawyers somewhere with more cash in their pockets because of this.
At my job recently, a trademarked name of ours was grabbed by a cybersquatter. This domain was registered shortly after we filed the trademark... Yeah, I know, we should have registered the domain name before they did, but REGARDLESS, they are asking $400 less than the WIPO arbitration fee for the domain in question.
This, I feel, is the very DEFINITION of cybersquatting, but since they have a monopoly on it, WIPO has seen fit to charge whatever they like (in this case $1500) to even LOOK at the case.
If only there were a way to put these cybersquatting businesses out of business. What the hell kind of business model is it to do something that is not legally justifiable and won't stand up in court...
Bastards. Like those that file nuisance lawsuits for a living... How is it possible to have a business based on what amounts to legally unjustifiable extortion that doesn't stand up in cout?

Re:Why alternatives?
Depending on where you have your domain registered, they may be able to redirect web traffic and email to your
.Mac website and email address. I've been using BuyDomains.com for a few years and I've been pretty happy with their service. Web visitors get "frame forwarded", so the illusion of my domain stays pretty much intact, and email forwarding is even simpler. The only real catch I've found is that Google will often index the true underlying address of web pages, and those links may break if I pull up stakes and move the site elsewhere.
This is a simple solution that might be helpful if your needs aren't too sophisticated.
