Re:Silverlight is insignificant
To put it this way, can you imagine writing something like GIMP, Abiword, Entourage or Firefox in Flash?

I'm guessing you haven't taken a look at "newer" Flash sites developed with Adobe Flex?

Encumbered by legacy and delusion
I agree. As fermion pointed out above, Microsoft is proving to be the new IBM, deluded that their solutions are always what's best for customers. Their new solutions are typically encumbered by their perspective of trying to leverage and protect their existing approaches--they just don't seem able to really embrace and exploit the possibilities of cloud computing. A look at the low rate of Vista adoption, and the recent rebranding of PlaysforSure, will also show how far from the mark they often fall, from what their customers and partners really want or need. They'll only lose their arrogance and break free of their legacy when the pressure increases--and it will.
The future will be even more challenging. In a few years Google's Android platform and other mobile devices on WiMax and 700 Mhz wireless, are likely to help push cloud computing into the mainstream. Google, Adobe, Microsoft, and others will all be developing better products. Take a look at Buzzword for a taste of how great a web application can be. Hybrid applications that can be synched and/or used disconnected, and encryption, will address the disadvantages of cloud computing today.
The future will include better options for users that will increasingly be in the cloud. It's likely to get here sooner than Microsoft will be ready for, but they'll eventually adapt and be a force to be reconed with in the cloud.

Yeah, it will be Flash
There's also Aviary. Adobe itself announced they're working on Photoshop Express, after announcing Premiere Express, both on the web. A few weeks ago they bought Buzzword after hinting on an online office suite. Those all run in the Flashplayer, and Hydra will let developers write pixel shaders for Flashplayer 10.
With all those new dev tools (Flex Builder, Thermo) and that C/C++ to Actionscript 3 converter, one might get the impression they're moving away from banners. But maybe that's just me.

OT: Re:How I read ebooks
*Great story, by the way. King Vikramiditya (Vikram for short) is tasked to carry a vampire a certain distance. Every time he speaks, the vampire goes back to its tree and he has to start again. So the meat of the book is a dozen or so stories told by the vampire in order to get Vikram to react by saying something out loud.
Do vampires live in trees now? If so, are they harmless when doing so? If so, wouldn't Vikram want to be babbling?

Re:First april fools joke of the year?
Well, AppleInsider has been pimping this for a while. Nobody else I've seen is citing build numbers unless they're quoting AppleInsider. Apple has messed with people before. I think either AI is getting bogus info from a source at Apple, or AI themselves is pranking.
But, April 1st is Apple's birthday, so it wouldn't be out of character for them to announce something big. Or prank AI, remember butt-head astronomer ? -
Re:Uh, yeah, sure...
this is cool and all, but users should be made aware that while the ipod can store general files and even boot and run linux the ipod wasn't designed to do it longterm and apple recommends against it.
the problem is mostly due to the enclosed design that traps heat inside the case with no airflow, which is partly why (aside from the nice look) the back of the ipod is made of metal, to dissipate the heat. this isn't a problem when you use the ipod as a music player as it only accesses the disk every now and then. the only time when it really ever heats up is when you are first putting a lot of music on it or when you do a restore.
btw, for those that haven't seen the innards of the ipod it has it's mainboard, hard drive and battery all sandwiched back to back. -
