Re:If the hack was primitive, where is the backup?
In the worst case, a rather primitive deployment like this should lose 15m-1h of data
Or maybe they lost no data at all and you are just jumping to conclusions about a problem you don't know anything about:
https://bycyklen.dk/en/news/sa...Notice that the problem is fixed almost entirely on the client side?

Re:ZFS
Doesn't seem like they lost anything, the way you're describing it. Here's the initial announcement, and here's the update. Doesn't;'t seem like they lost anything in their database.
What seems to have happened is that the hack has managed to erase the client side. Either poison data/commands has erased the tablet they attach to the bike, or the tablet still has data but is now out of sync with their restored backup. That will be why they're talking about going round rebooting the tablets on the bikes - it's the client side that's wrong, ZFS-nothing - it simply wouldn't have helped.
You know what else would have helped quite a bit in this scenario? Taking the parents point and learning how to store a valid tablet image under revision control, along with maintaining the capability to push that image out to resolve the "client" problem in an automated fashion.

Free Bikes
I've yet to find a web site which lists spots you can go to find free bicycles to ride.
Here you go: http://www.bycyklen.dk/english/thecitybikezone.asp x
Slightly OT, but in the city center of Copenhagen you can ride "Citybikes" for free, provided you can find one at the stands :) -
Free bikes, ad sponsored
In Copenhagen, read about how it works, in here

Re:witte fietsen
An easy mistake (since the info you were looking for is not on the english page), but the may 2004 date is the start of the 2004 season. The project has been in operation since 1995, so while "standing the test of time" might not have been achieved yet, it is far from a brand new thing. If you happen to know danish (or wish to try with automated translation) this is the history of the "Bycykel" project. The project was concieved in the late eighties, and started on may 31st of 1995.

It also works in Copenhagen
It also works in Copenhagen. The bycykle (citybike) website http://www.bycyklen.dk/dansk/bycykel-info/info.ht

Re:Free to use bikes in HelsinkiCopenhagen (capital of Denmark, North of Germany) has had free bikes for a few years. Each spring the city buys a set of bikes for the turist season. These bikes last for about 6 months, and in the autumn most of them have been destroyed. The advertisers pay around 200$ for placing an ad on a bike, and the city takes care of repairing the bike.
If I remember corectly the bike repairing is taken care of by an unemployment project (training the unemplyed to have a job), so in the effect the bike are partly being paid for by social help

Re:witte fietsen
Copenhagen has a Citybike project. It if free to use, but you have to deposit 20 kroner (around $4)in a slot in the bike, a bit like a trolley in the supermarket.
Most of the money comes from advertising. -

In Copenhagen Denmark, we have a Yellow bike program called bycyklen (aka City bike).
The bike is rather unpleasant to ride for long distances, but can be used for small trips.
But there are idiots even in Denmark, so there are problems with people stealing them.
