While there have been more than 150 cell phone viruses discovered since 2004, compared to over 150,000 Windows PC viruses the count seems low at this time. Marketing researcher Gartner suggests a widespread attack could surface by the end of next year. With the number of cellular devices sold in 2005 far beyond that of Windows PCs and no choice of anti-virus protection for most cellular device customers, should the cell carriers listen more closely to the anti-virus vendors?"

Jamesday writes "Monty Widenius accepted a plaque celebrating ten years of MySQL and PHP at LinuxTag. Until the end of June MySQL also has some 10th anniversary MySQL mugs on sale which feature the names of all MySQL employees in April 2005, about 200 people who can personally testify that you can make a living from open source software. Since Slashdot and MySQL share many users in common, I asked the MySQL community manager to give some mugs away to the Slashdot crowd. An arbitrary number of registered Slashdot posters, at least one, whose answers are closest to the exact date when MySQL 1.0 was first released internally will get one. Answers in response to this post, 24 hour time limit; no employees, former employees, their relatives or others we think should be ineligible. Winner(s) will be notified by a reply to their post."

All profits from the store will of course go directly to the NetBSD Foundation; at the moment, the available items include t-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, clocks, mousepads, logo pads and tote bags. Go ahead and read the license -- but do keep an eye on the NDA you have to agree to first. If you find an NDA to be an objectionable first step -- and I'll admit, I haven't read the license because I don't agree to the NDA terms -- then speak up about it. The Department of Justice is accepting public comments from industry professionals about the new licensing terms. There is a real concern that such pseudo-open licensing could effectively scuttle development efforts on projects like Samba & Mono, but we need to get open access to the license in order to figure out what the risks are. If you have anything to contribute, now is the time to speak up to the DOJ."
