Star Wars Galaxies - Fact-Checking, Fan Style
Thanks to an anonymous reader for pointing to this interesting LA Times article regarding Star Wars Galaxies. As well as plenty of background information, the piece talks about how detail-orientated beta testers of the forthcoming Sony-published PC MMORPG are, and includes this choice quotation: "..a German fan was outraged that the cockpit dimensions of an X-wing star fighter varied from those in the movies. Blackman looked into it and found that the game's version was indeed off -- by 6 centimeters." -
The Hiring, Firing and Re-Hiring of Spider-Man
Obiwan Kenobi writes "Remember that rumor that Tobey McGuire was fired and Jake Gyllenhaal was going to be Spider-Man? Well, it's true. According to the LA Times, McGuire's unwillingness to reveal the extent of his back injuries from his last project (Seabiscuit) resulted in a huge power struggle that incurred the wrath of Universal president Ron Meyer (whose daughter is 'coincidentally' dating McGuire), a pissed off Sam Raimi, and a now-fired agent. Interesting read about the politics of making a big budget blockbuster." Really just a gossipy story frankly, but McGuire seems to be in for the sequel despite the back problems. -
Music Industry Staggers While Film Industry Blooms

"Yet to be felt" might be too strong, but DVD sales are booming, and don't seem to be much crimped by illegal copying. -
DVD Format Changing Movie-making

MPAA Head Valenti on DVD "Hackers"
Anonymous Coward writes "Commentary from Jack Valenti, MPAA President and chief executive, in today's L.A. Times, with his side of the DeCSS issue: 'The intent of these Web sites is clear. Break the encryption. Steal the product. The posting of the hacking code is akin to mass producing and distributing keys to a department store. The keys have only one real purpose: to allow a thief to open a locked door to steal the goods he targets.' Yikes." Yep. We've heard Jack's words of wisdom before, when the first MPAA lawsuits were filed. This article is definitely required reading for anyone interested in this battle.
