The Craig Venter Institute's Global Ocean Sampling Expedition has been collecting Metagenomic samples for the past couple of years. Among other things the expedition has doubled the number of putative proteins. An excellent video from the expedition is available at http://plos.cnpg.com/lsca/webinar/venter/20070306
/ index.html and a set of recently published papers from the expedition are available for free at http://collections.plos.org/plosbiology/gos-2007.p hp
A website hosting the data from the expedition catered towards use on metagenomic samples has been developed by the Venter institute and is available at http://camera.calit2.net/ -
Take the Initiative!
I turned 18 on October 7th- just a few weeks ago. I'm a senior in high school, and I've worked as a programmer at the San Diego Supercomputer interfacing the Open Croquet 3D operating system to their GIS servers, a database engineer at the University of California, San Diego, a researcher at Calit2, and lastly a network security analyst for Softwink, Inc.
I have no special contacts, no utterly unremarkable skill- I'm not trying to show off. My point is that if you can take the initiative to teach things to yourself so much as to qualify for a job (by the fact that you're asking for one, I can assume that you have), you need to put yourself out there and get one. It's not that hard- people are hiring, and if you're qualified, there's really not that much to stop them from letting you be an employee- or at least an intern.
Sorry for this horribly long-winded post. To summarize: just put yourself out there; don't ask slashdot.

Re:The differenceI can speak for the ~7000 computers we have on our engineering campus. A majority of them are Windows ( no surprise here), but over the past few years Mac OS X has increased dramaticaly. In fact Mac OS X equals all the Linux and Unix boxes put together 1188 Mac - (948 Linux - (530 -53)dual boot + 545 Unixes ). Most of us are replacing our Sun, HP, SGI machines with Mac OS X, Linux and some BSD boxes.
The numbers: 1188 Macs, 3453 Windows, 948 Linux *, 545 Unixes
* 530 of the 948 Linux machines are dual boot with Windows. Over 90% of users choose to boot with Windows versus Linux
** 600 machines are unknown exotic OSes floating on campus. BSDs, QNX, student brewed OS, honeypots...etc.
***1000 laptops unregistered with depts floating around with students and researchers which only increases the number on Windows and Macs.

UCSD network folks doing good stuff...
Got to say, UCSD is getting a very strong group in networking. Savage and Voelker and Snoeren, plus the folks at SDSC, plus CalIT2 (Larry Smarr's latest deal). Watch that space...

Depends on social cohesion...
I saw a presentation by Gabriele Wienhausen (provost of Sixth College at UCSD) about their "digital playroom". I couldn't find a page for it, but did find a press release about Sony donating a bunch of stuff.
Basically it's a room that students need to swipe their ids to enter. Once inside, they've got free access to camcorders, digital cameras, lots of computers, etc. I think it's unattended, and open very long hours (24/7 during finals).
The key is making the students feel like the equipment is theirs, so taking it would be stealing from their friends. Otherwise, any unattended system is going to be plagued by theft.

Re:At my bus stop...
I can't find the link to the project webpage but I know it uses this network. Anyone find a link? I'm interested in looking into the project's current status.

Not to be confused with...CL-ITIT is not related to the California Institue of Technology - or at least not directly. Per their vision statement, they were created in 2000 at UC San Diego and UC Irvine to "help ensure that California maintain(s) its leadership in the rapidly changing telecommunications and information technology marketplace."
Also, their statement on the Chiaro Networks "OptIPuter" is here. Caltech is an entirely different animal.

UCSD has a similar thing for College Students
This seems to be a popular topic recently, UCSD is researching uses for student PDAs on a wide scale. I believe several hundred UCSD freshman in CS are going to be semi-permanently "loaned" HP Journada PDAs in order to participate in this experiment on a wider scale.. cool stuff check here for more info: http://www.calit2.net/education/activeweb.html
