From a baseball purist standpoint, MLB has become a Home Run Derby of sorts, but that has VERY little to do with strike zone

I think this section is an excellent analysis of the parent post. If the strike zone were the cause of "Home Run Derby" baseball, you'd expect to see an overall increase in league batting average. The theory would say that by improving the quality of the pitches the batter faces as strikes, they'd be hitting more of everything, not just home runs.

Anyway, some guy's chart bears this out- keep in mind what looks like a big difference on that chart (.006, say) represents about 30 hits per team per season. Given that the NL appears to be hitting a collective .262 right now, I think I'd be hard pressed to convince anyone that umpires' collective decisions about strike zones can move overall batting averages so minimally yet be the cause of an increase in home runs.

Yeah, scouts in the US are tied to religion. There are religious rewards for a whole bunch of religions, not just Christianity and Judaism. You can read a list of the various "religious emblems" recognized on this page. (I think I got the Protestant award when I was a Scout.)

Atheism is right out, though. The scouting leadership has made it very clear that a Scout in the Boy Scouts of America must believe in a God. (Read up about atheism and religion in general in relation to the BSA from someone's rant.)

The official "reasoning" behind why a US Scout must be "reverant" is that scouts are "morally straight" and that without having a religious code or backing, you cannot be "morally straight" or some BS like that. You can be kicked out of scouting if you profess no belief in God and won't back down.

While the "belief in God" thing is sorta relaxed (Buddhists welcomed, for example), the idea that you must belong to and believe in a religion is not. I'm not entirely sure I agree with that, but then again, there are quite a few other official policies that I disagree with (like locking out homosexuals - this decision was made because the Mormon/Methodist churches threatened to pull funding if it was not enforced).

All in all, I think that the Boy Scouts are a worthwhile organization. I enjoyed my trip to Eagle Scout, even though I disagree with some of the official BSA policies. It's still a good experience, I think, even if some of the official policies are kinda strange.

Thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the organization and support provided by a few of our fellow defendants we are still here! Another hearing is scheduled for January 14th.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Explanation on legality of this information:

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention

www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

UPDATE: Here is a 2600 story with more details on how rhythm.cx was shut down.

The sites weren't all that high security. Oooh, the "US Army Dental Care System" computer was compromized, while it is in the .mil hierarchy, I doubt that much effort went into securing it.

I'd say flipz is probably a very busy script kiddie. The cracked sites certainly don't show much imagination.

  The problem is that if a single .mil/.gov/etc site is compromised, there is the distinct possibility that other sites can be compromised. Simple example: many .mil sites only allow access to "public" web pages from other .mil sites. The same goes for .edu and .gov sites... The path to a final destination is much shorter than from "the big bad internet"... Another simple scenario would be if although THAT machine was not "secured" since it has nothing of importance on it, there is a slight posssibility that the machine is on a network segment that in turn has access to another segment that DOES have material that may be valuable to someone else...
  
  BTW: The above scenario is exactly why many "high security" sites do not allow employees to have "important" material even on their normal day-to-day office machines..

Whatever it was, that name doesn't seem to resolve anymore. I guess they must be covering their tracks for now, because fear.microsoft.com and doubt.microsoft.com also don't resolve. :-)

Hmm. The never-ending hack/crack debate. One the one hand, using "cracked" is obviously inappropriate, since the term already had a meaning in computer security prior to its application in 1984 to people who break into computers. It has, for as long as anybody remembers, described people who break the copy protection of software. This usage far predates the usage cited in the Jargon File (which itself admits to the 1984 date).

On the other hand, the term "hacked" is obviously inappropriate in this case. This system intrusion was merely the work of a script kiddie, it appears, and hence is not any sort of hacking.

We need a verb that means "broken into by a script kiddie," so as to differentiate from "broken into by an intelligent security expert" (which I'll continue to call "hacked") and from "breaking the copy protection of" (which I'll continue to call "cracked."

I personally prefer to use the term "hax0red," which, helpfully, is what they often call it themselves, so it should not be hard to have this term adopted. This differentiates from mature, intelligent people, who use "hacked," to describe their work (whatever that work may be, be it kernel hacking or NT hacking) and the script kiddies who use 3l33t sp33k to describe their work. It also allows "hax0r d00d" to be used as a convenient synonym for "script kiddie."

Personally, I don't see much difference between the "new" (web page) crackers and the "old" (copy protection) crackers. Both require basic assembly knowledge, and the ability to use a debugger. And lots and lots and lots and lots of time on your hands. Obviously I am ignoring those amazing buffer overruns exploits where people manage to get code in through a function that strips out all characters but '9' 'a' and 'q', but your average exploit is not that impressive an achievement. Nor is your average software crack. I fully expect to be flamed by the script kiddies and the h4x0r groupies. Please at least attempt to keep it coherent.
