Man Breaks Into Bar And Runs It
29-year-old Travis Kevie managed to successfully re-open the historic Valencia Club in Penryn, Ca. and run it for 4 days before he was arrested for not actually owning the bar. An Auburn Journal newspaper article about the club's relaunch was Kevie's downfall. From the article: "Detective Jim Hudson became suspicious after reading about the Valencia Club's re-opening in an Auburn Journal newspaper article that featured a picture of Kevie and identified him as the club's new 'owner/operator.' Not only had Detective Hudson had previous run-ins with Kevie, he knew the Valencia Club's liquor license had been surrendered." -
Verizon Charged Marine's Widow an Early Termination Fee
In a decision that was reversed as soon as someone with half a brain in their PR department learned about it, Verizon charged a widow a $350 early termination fee. After the death of her marine husband, Michaela Brummund decided to move back to her home town to be with her family. Verizon doesn't offer any coverage in the small town so Michaela tried to cancel her contract, only to be hit with an early termination fee. From the article: "'I called them to cancel. I told them the situation with my husband. I even said I would provide a death certificate,' Michaela said." -
"Accidental" Download Sending 22-Year-Old Man To Prison
An anonymous reader writes "Two years ago, Matthew White searched Limewire for porn. He was looking for 'College Girls Gone Wild,' but ended up downloading some images of child pornography. This was accidental, according to White, and he quickly deleted the images. A year later, the FBI showed up on his family's doorstep and asked to search the computer. After thorough sleuthing, the FBI found some images 'deep within the hard drive.' According to White, the investigators agreed that he himself could not have accessed the files anymore. Matthew now faces 20 years in jail for possession of child pornography. On advice from his lawyer, he intends to plead guilty so that he will 'hopefully' end up with 3.5 years in jail, 10 years probation and a registration as a sex offender. 'The FBI could not comment on this specific case, but said if child pornography is ever downloaded accidentally, the user needs to call authorities immediately. They may confiscate your computer, but it's better than the alternative.'" -
Food Bank Gets Phelps-Labeled Cereal
San Francisco Food Bank officials say they recently received a donation from Kellogg Co. of thousands of boxes of breakfast cereal, all with Olympic athlete Michael Phelps' face on the front. Kellogg decided not to renew Phelps' contract after his picture was taken with a pot pipe. Food bank executive director Paul Ash says he doesn't know specifically why the Phelps cereal was donated. Hopefully, the hungry people that this cereal is going to feed will be strong enough to resist the picture of Phelps, and the heavy drug use it causes, unlike the youth of America. -
Lawmakers Say Electric Cars Are Too Quiet
California lawmakers are pushing a bill that would ensure electric vehicles make enough noise to be heard by blind and visually impaired people. The state senate has already passed the bill but the governator hasn't yet taken a position. If passed, the bill would establish a committee which would study ways electric vehicles could make more noise. The committee's recommendations would be due by 2010. May I suggest a siren or some baseball cards in the wheels.
