    Assuming he actually did it himself--which seems to be a signifigant leap considering the program he's become (in)famous for, DeCSS was blatantly ripped off from a GPL project only stripping out the copyright info and renaming the functions.

    Jon Johansen is not the hero for open source software as he likes to describe himself lately.

    The truth is, he is a liar, a defender of closed source software, ignorant to the GPL and a guy who simply wanted to copy DVDs. His lies lead most of us to believe that he is a good guy and got him even free a legal team paid by EFF.

    ...that he is so often portrayed to be. Just recently, I picked up this in a news forum. Read for yourself, but basically Jon bashed Linux and hence most certainly did NOT want to watch DVDs on his Linux box

    Now while I was not able to verify whether or not these accusations hold true, he would not really deserve much pity and support if it was.

    But of course - the basic idea behind this trial (circumvention, CSS, MPAA's politics and monopoly, ...) still sort of demands attention...
