He already has ...
Cinematic Titanic which also has the people from MST3K that don't hate him. As a huge fan, this sounds fishy.
There's also the much MUCH more prolific and IMO funnier Rifftrax. The timing is interesting considering that RIfftrax just started bringing back old MST3K episodes every Monday with a new intro video by Mike Nelson. I backed one of the Rifftrax Kickstarter's and I don't regret it (I even have an mp3 I made of Kevin Murphy saying my name from one of the reward tiers.
I don't really know what caused the rift between Joel and Mike/Kevin but it seems clear that there is one. Personally, while he has his moments, I don't think Joel is as funny.

Not really a blog but..
Zero Punctuation from The Escapist and Ben Croshaw is fucking hilarious - these are short, fast paced game reviews done in flash animation if you're not familiar.
Red Letter Media for Half in the Bag, Best of the Worst, and of course Mr. Plinkett. These are movie reviews, commentary and sometimes satire from movie buffs. The most well known (and the reason I still regularly check back) are the scathing several hours long multi-part dissections of the Star Wars Prequels there are some for a few other things as well but the eloquence and insight in the Star Wars Prequel diatribes is really something spectacular and worth watching (it will put in to words what you probably felt).
Even further removed from blogs... Rifftrax and Cinematic Titanic where two different ventures from the cast of Mystery Science Theater 3000 continue doing what they did sans puppets. I prefer Rifftrax of the 2, and collect them both.

Re:The flatlining of the Hollywood movie scene
I wouldn't say no one is still showing them:
Cinematic Titanic
Rifftrax
Mystery Science Theater 3000 (okay, no ones still showing this).

Re:2012
I have the feeling this movie is squarely in the sights of RiffTrax, a group headed by Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy, and Bill Corbet who release audio commentary files designed to be synchronized to your DVD playback. Since they're only releasing audio commentaries, they can Riff on any movie without getting the rights, so they've been able to skewer a whole bunch of movies.
There's another group which does something similar called Cinematic Titanic, composed of Joel Hodgson (Joel), Trace Beaulieu (Crow T Robot), J Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo from Season 1 of MST3K), and Frank Conniff (TV's Frank), but I believe they only release DVDs with Riffs of movies they can get the rights to.
I think both groups finally made up and performed together, but they're still separate groups of people working on separate projects.

Re:Lederhosen Hosen
TV's Frank (or more specifically, Frank Conniff) is still around and riffing movies!
Enjoy!

Re:Yawn...
Check Cinematic Titanic for Joel's similar venture.
By the way, Mike "showed up" in the first season as head writer and transformed MST3k from 3 guys riffing the movie on the fly to the hilarious show you enjoy today.

Cinematic Titanic hits the road in Feb/Mar!!
Anyone know if they're planning anymore live shows?
Joel, Trace, Frank, Mary Jo and J. Elvis hit the road in February and March: http://cinematictitanic.com/wpmu/121/

Re:Slashvertisement
Joel and the older cast are doing something similar over at Cinematic Titanic.

_Some_ of "the stars"
I love the Rifftrax guys, but to call them "the stars" does a disservice to the many other major MST3K cast members (most of whom are now in the competing project Cinematic Titanic, including MST's founder Joel Hodgson. I'm just sayin'.

Joel already working on a second act?
Pretty much 90% of the cast is already doing a second MST3K show called Cinematic Titanic. Why isn't Mike in it? Lots of reasons. Why is Mike's different? I guess it's a little different. But bottom line is, Joel made a second act like a year ago. I always loved Joel way more than mike, I guess mike just needs a little help making jokes.

Cinematic Titanic is the Real Deal
Cinematic Titanic is the real evolution of MST3K. Their first 3 DVD's are hilarious.
From the website http://www.cinematictitanic.com/:Cinematic Titanic is a feature length movie riffing show and is an artist owned and operated venture created by Joel Hodgson, the creator of the Peabody award-winning Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Cinematic Titanic features the original cast and writers of MST3K, which is Hodgson (Joel Robinson), Trace Beaulieu (Crow), and J. Elvis Weinstein (Tom Servo). Filling out the ensemble is Mary Jo Pehl (Pearl Forrester) and Frank Conniff (TVâ(TM)s Frank). Cinematic Titanic's focus is to riff on the movies we love, which are 'the unfathomable', 'the horribly great', and the just plain 'cheesy' movies from the past. Our first feature length DVD Cinematic Titanic's "The Oozing Skull" is available for purchase at EZtakes.com

Re:This is why
The price is too high; we should be able to buy the movie for less than half that, then download it immediately (no DRM, of course). That would lower the costs of doing business - no discs to produce, no need to send anything by mail. Joel might even make more money doing it that way. He is relying on the Internet for marketing, as Mike Nelson has done very successfully with the help of that somethingawful guy, so why not also rely on the Internet for distribution too?
Actually, the Cinematic Titanic group intend to do exactly this. They planned on the first release being both downloadable and also on sale as a physical DVD at the same time. Unfortunately, there were some rights issues involved and they couldn't do that simultaneously (although they still plan on releasing this way in the not-too-distant future...)
From the Cinematic Titanic website:Also, for the time being, this feature is only being made available as an actual DVD. We found out in the eleventh hour of negotiating with Sam Sherman that only the DVD rights are available right now, with the 'download to burn' rights becoming available in the spring. Sorry about that chiefs. Our survey indicated that four out of five of you prefer DVD anyway. But this download thing- We suspect there's a future to it.
