“PIPCU has now been running for over six months and has gone from strength to strength. The unit is a 21 strong-team consisting of detectives, police staff investigators, analysts, researchers, an education officer and a media and communications officer. The team also benefits from the skills and expertise of two secondees; a Senior Intelligence Officer from the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) and an Internet Investigator from the British Recorded Music Industry (BPI).http://

Re:Let's see if I get this right...Only if you read the summary, and not the actual reported news. They arrested the proxy server owner. That needs a warrant of arrest. There's no 'skipping due process' for the police, or the charges don't stand when the person arrives in court.
PIPCU arrest Nottingham man believed to be running proxy server
The Police Intellectual Property Crime Unit has arrested a man in Nottingham on suspicion of running an ‘umbrella’ website providing access to other websites which have been subject to legal blocking orders.
The 20-year-old man was questioned by detectives from the City of London Police unit at a local police station before later being released on bail.
The operation, supported by the Federation Against Copyright Theft, uncovered evidence of the proxy server providing access to 36 other websites that had been blocked for offering illegal or infringing content. The domain names of these sites have been voluntarily handed to police and the related web pages now show a police warning banner.
The arrest is part of the City of London Police unit’s ongoing drive to clamp down on websites providing access to illegal or infringing content, known as Operation Creative. Last week it was announced that PIPCU are replacing advertising on copyright infringing websites with official force banners, warning the user that the site is currently under criminal investigation. -
Re:Who are the "Metropolitan Police"?
And not to be confused with the http://www.cityoflondon.police.uk/CityPolice/About/

Re:It's "THE Metropolitan Police"
The Metropolitan Police are the London police force.
Nit-picking here, but there is a separate force that serves the City of London. I don't know how the jurisdictions work (or even if that's a valid concept any more in the UK), but the Met serves Greater London, not the City of London (which is essentially the Square Mile).

Re:Developed != Civilised
If you want to compare apples to apples, try comparing the city of Atlanta to the City of London: 520,000 Atlantans as compared to 8000 Londoners, or 340,000 commuters.
They aren't useful definitions for this purpose. The City of London ("the City", "the Square Mile") is essentially a financial district. Nothing is open at the weekend. Government buildings are mostly outside the City (as are most landmarks you'd recognise).
The City has it's own police force, separate from the rest of London, mostly for historical reasons. Their statistics are here (big PDF). You will notice on page 20 that there were zero murders, zero attempted murders, zero manslaughters, but six threats/conspiracies to murder (I would guess they are mostly threats to CEOs, bankers etc).Or try it this way: 5.4 Million in the Atlanta Metropolitan District, compared to 7.5 Million in Greater London.
That would be a better comparison. Note that the daytime population of Greater London is about 9.5 million.
An even better comparison would be to take a similarly-sized metropolitan area in the UK, but since one doesn't exist one half the size will have to do. The West Midlands (Birmingham, Wolverhampton etc) has a population of 2.5 million. Crime statistics (PDF)
There were 43 murders and 7 manslaughters, which is about the same as Atlanta. (I don't think the other statistics are comparable, unless the West Midlands really does have 10 times as much violent crime -- perhaps there's some difference in what's recorded.) -
Re:Co$ and City of London Police bribesCan I point out, again, for the benefit of non-Brits, that the police in this instance were the City of London Police - which is a very small constabulary which only covers the City of London - essentially the "Square Mile" financial area - and not the Metropolitan Police, who cover the other 600 square miles of London. The Met are rather more measured that the CoLP, who are the ones with dodgy links to the Cult of ElRon.
City of London Police - 900 officers.
Metropoliltan Police - 32,000 officers. -
Re:Got that yesterday...
The link is here: http://www.ic3.gov/
Obviously the FBI don't watch "The Bill". IC3 is the abbreviation used by London police for a black person (e.g. "IC3 male").
Do they call the Terrorism Complaint Center www.ic6.gov?
