Re:The internet allows us to track and organize...
Meet me at the Capitol. I'll bring the torches, you bring the pitchforks.
We'd be going after corrupt politicians who control the nation's military, not Frankenstein's monster. Realistically, there's no way to compete against that kind of firepower without defections from army and guard units in the region.
I'm only half kidding.
Same here. The last traditional coup attempt in this country was during the 30's, the robber-barons wanted to oust FDR but were ratted on by the man they tapped to lead their forces.
http://www.corporatemofo.com/stories/030928warracket.htmSince then, the last effective coup we had was when the Supreme Court intervened and declared Bush the victor. Many people argued that this is just hyperbole from the Left and we need to cut back on the sugar and crack. I don't think so. We're in the midst of a gradual erosion of civilian control over this government, dying by inches over decades. The change is so slow it's hard to even point to where it began and the degrees by which it changes. But just look at how both the left and right are howling over issues that are ramrodded through Congress without any input from the people they allegedly represent. I'm bitching about FISA. My dad, a total right wing radio winger, is bitching about the new Dubai ports deal that's working it's way back into Congress. He's bitching about Bush and giving amnesty to illegals. The truth is that the parties aren't listening to any of us, they're just doing whatever the hell they want.
When neither party will represent the will of the people, we no longer have a representative government.

Re:Overanalyzed Much?
Pseudo-philosophy? Riiiiight. Just because it raises issues that are well covered in philosphy, doesn't change the fact that it is philosophy. Saying it isn't philosophy, when it clearly covers philosophical ideas, is like calling a text book on Platos allegory of the cave, or determinism as is the case with reloaded, psuedo philosophy because, shock horror, it covers theories that have been well thought out and covered in the past. Perhaps you should actually go out and see the movie instead of regurgitating the opinions of the various film critics who didn't understand the movie, unless you live in Egypt of course.

Reading too much in?From linked article:
Neo and Trinity are shown making love beneath an arch. In religious iconography, being shown beneath an arch is a traditional sign of divinity.
An arch is also a way of keeping the ceiling from falling on your head. -
Re:This is going to be instantly moded down
People also interpret "Stairway to Heaven" as "deep". That doesnt mean it is.
Certainly, the Matrix alludes to many things. But people are going overboard with it. For example, read The Corporate Mofo's Guide to Matrix: Reloaded. Now, some of it makes sense, but then theres things like "Neo's five previous incarnations represent the Five Books of Moses that make up the Old Testament." WHAT??? In places, its hard to tell if the guide is supposed to be satire or not.
But yes, they did put some meaning behind some things. But for the most part, they put a bunch of stuff into a movie, and are letting the fans tell them what it means. Like "Stairway to Heaven"... -
For anyone doubting the deeper meaning of the film
Read Corporate Mofo's take and be corrected.

Mod parent up please.
Thanks for the link to that eye-opening interview on corporatemofo. The interview sums up the whole mess in K-12 texts nicely.

Re:Different at the College Level...Why?
In addition to this, it's apparently pretty difficult to make a profit on k-12 textbooks, and the toughest committees for passing/buying a book are in Texas. To avoid differing versions, costly rewrites and so on, most publishers give their books to a few select committees in Texas (and California) for approval and only if they pass there do they go on to the rest of the country.
It's not as local a decision as you may think. Well, unless you live in Texas or California. But you don't have to take my word for it. -
Re:American-ism
When you say "People outside of the US..." I hope you're not referring to us (Canadians), because from one Canuck to another, let me assure you that the tech careers I've seen here are nothing less than bouncy.
As for starting a union, this article sums up most of the reasons why IT workers should seriousely consider unionizing. The situations described in the article are typical of every IT worker I know, and from what I've read so far, they're typical of a lot of Slashdot posters as well. Maybe we should form a union. -
