God then cursed the serpent, imposed reproductive difficulties upon Eve and "cursed the ground for [Adam's] sake" [Genesis 3:17]. From that moment, everything that Adam – and mankind since – ate had grown in the cursed ground. Cell by living cell, Adam began to very slowly change from his initial state of eternal perfection to mortal imperfection, and he finally died at the age of 930 years [Genesis 5:5]. Nevertheless, Adam and Eve's immediate offspring would have been very close to physical perfection while brother-sister marriages were the only unions possible! Further, according to the genealogies given in Scripture, pre-flood longevity was about the same as that for Adam, so families were very large compared to those of today. Brother-sister unions were not only unavoidable, but they undoubtedly became traditional and expected.

I recall hearing a snippet on the radio from http://www.creationmoments.com/ a few years back. I tend to avoid the evolution/creationism debate because I don't personally have the depth of knowledge to push one way or the other. But I'm interested in a real evolutionist's answer to how critters like the bombardier beetle evolved/survived to live in their present state.

I grabbed the meat of their transcript so we don't need to /. the site.

The bombardier beetle has a powerful and complex system for protecting himself from enemies. Glands within the beetle produce a mixture of two hydroquinone compounds and hydrogen peroxide. These chemicals must be held in separate chambers, because when they come into contact with each other they react. When the beetle is threatened, the chemicals are mixed in a third chamber where a third chemical is added and an explosive reaction takes place. This reaction forces the caustic solution out through a special "nozzle." The beetle is skilled in aiming this nozzle at its enemy.

If this system is missing any of its parts, it is more than worthless to the beetle; the chemicals alone are very dangerous. So this sophisticated defense system could not have evolved in stages. Imagine the poor beetle who evolved the ability to produce the chemicals but hadn't yet evolved the right chambers to mix them without blowing itself up. The first time he became alarmed, poof!-no more beetle at all!

Contrary to what the average slashbot living in their parents' basement thinks, there *is* hard scientific evidence that the Earth is only 6000 years old.

I agree with you on the foolishness of "Young
Earth" studies. (Young Earthers believe all geology was a result
of a biblical flood and the world is as old as the bible seems to say,
and look for "science" that supports this view). But just calling the
"Young-earth" crowd foolish doesn't necessarily convince anyone. You
need proof. Here is a brief history of the universe that must all be
argued away by the young-earthers.


A brief history of the world:

The universe itself is about 14 billion years old, give or take a billion.

The world is about 4.55 billion years old. This date
is probably when the moon was created by a large impact with
the earth. The oldest rocks we can find are about 3.8 billion years
ago. Primitive lifeforms exist from this era. Until 2 billion years ago the
earth was an inhospitable place, basically devoid of oxygen.
During the paleozoic era, from 540 million years ago, to 250
million years ago, complex life evolved in the sea and plants formed on
land. The first reptiles evolved. A number of mass extinctions occur in
this time, but 250 million years ago, a really big mass extinction
happens. Was it volcanism? More than 90% of existing species become
extinct.

The Mesozoic era, from 250 million years ago, to 65 million years
ago, is the age of reptiles. Dinosaurs appear. 65 Million years ago,
something big hit the earth and caused a huge round of mass extinctions
known as the kt
event. The dinosaurs disappeared. This is the "big break" for the
mammals that became eventually our species. Between 65 million years
ago and 4-5 million years ago, really ugly mammal forms evolved into
things that look like people. 4-5 million years ago, we have evidence
of some of our first recognizable forerunners. A. Afarensis ("Lucy")
is between 3 and 4 million years old. 400,000 years ago we find Homo
Sapiens. 200,000 years ago we find evidence of Homo Sapiens Sapiens
-- modern man.

By contrast, civilization with recorded history only begins 10,000
years ago between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, in modern-day
Iraq.
