Who's Looking For Near Earth Objects?That being said, I remember reading an article (wish I could find it and cite it) that said there were only 4 government employees whose job description includes looking for asteroids to hit earth; most of the people doing this are amateur astronomers.
Actually there are about 100 people worldwide searching for NEOs according to NASA's Ames Research Centre Asteroid Coment Impact Hazards Website.
The most productive NEO search program is the USAF/MIT run LINEAR which has discovered more NEOs than all other search programs combined.

- Spacewatch
- Lowell Observatory Near-Earth Object Search (LONEOS)
- Catalina Sky Survey
- Japanese Spaceguard Association (JSGA)
- Asiago DLR Asteroid Survey (ADAS)
I haven't been able to read the article because it's slashdotted, but it makes me wonder why they would have something like the Torino Impact Scale if they weren't going to use it to inform the public. So far only one object has ever has ever been classifed a "1" on the tornio scale, but that doesn't look like it's going to a a problem. But with most NEOs still unidentified the most likely warning we will have is none at all.

Stratospheric platforms
There is a lot of interest recently in stratosphereric platforms as an alternative to satellites, both heavier and lighter than air.
Geostationary satellites are too far to support high data rates to mobile terminals and also suffer from high latency. LEO satellites require an entire constellation covering most of the Earth before there is continous coverage in any part of the Earth. This all-or-nothing property makes it a dangerous business proposition.

Re:Mars is the stepping stone to the Solar System
I believe that this was the same book quoted in a special issue of Scientific American in May 99 or so. I believe he is quite wrong. If you look at the recent solar flare (july 14th through the 18th), at http://crlgin.crl.go.jp/s edoss/solact3/do?d=2000%2C7%2C19 you'll see that the spectrum is much harder than that mentioned in that article (he talks about 1 MeV protons)...this flare had many many protons above 100 MeV. note: I noticed the graph here doesn't explain the data much...go down to proton flux and look at the red white and blue lines...the white line is protons with energy greater than 100 MeV, the blue is greater than 50 MeV, and teh red is greater than 10 MeV. This is a real danger. If you look in another one of my posts, I cut and pasted the spectrum for particles (just protons) expected on one of the upcoming Mars missions...this spectra too is much more penetrating than what Robert Zubrin's book describes (assuming it matches the SciAm article, I don't have the book, but will check it out).

as I do, you might enjoy this site. It gives a better format in my opinion that NOAA, but it is essentially the same data.
