As several people have pointed out, RAID-(X) is trivial to do with CD-R/RW, and is easily usable on floppies. I use it all the time. Several other people have linked to my shoddy HOWTO on CD-RAID, and that will get you going if you really want a RAID. Keep in mind that it is totally unusable unless you have a system with (n) CD/floppy drives or enough spare HD space to hold (n-1) cd images.

I wouldn't do it with floppies. Disk images on a bootable CD-R/RW work quite well. If a disk craps out, boot to the CD and make a new disk image. Writing a bootable CD with a small Linux or *BSD install and all of the images is easy. Of course, that means you have to carry (n + 1) + backup CD, but that shouldn't be terrible.

I've seen some possibilities on the old slashdot article. Someone posted the idea of making cd-raid0 backup and this smart person even posted the HOWTO on his page. Maybe you can modify this method to do cd/floppy-raid5, but I personally think making floppy-raid5(or floppy-whatever redundant method by any software) is not worth doing in your case because you need same software to regenerate the dead disk(s) on the remote site. And, by the way, how are you going to carry your regeneration software with you? Same floppy disk that are subject to crap out?

I think it's better to make the image file(s) of the floppy disk(s) and backup the entire sets and imaging program to more reliable and useful media like CD-R(though it's not that reliable, too) or your notebook(it's cumbersome though) before going out so that you'd only have to carry one additional CD (or heavy notebook) and one additional blank floppy to reduce the chance of disaster. Anyway, if you have large piles of the floppy backups already, you should backup these unstable magnetic timebombs(with random timer setup) to other media as soon as possible!

Is at www.dpworld.net -- if you mainly just want unlimited POP3 and mail forwarding boxes and a very small (1 MB storage) web site, they have a $60 one-time setup with no monthly or annual fees.

My family site is there -- I use their email service and have a main family page. Sub-pages link to free web space providers such as Crosswinds.net. You don't have the ability to run much (if any) in the way of CGI scripts, though.

My biggest complaint about DPWorld is that about once a week, give or take, they are unreachable for a few hours.

Um, you might want to try a nation that the US government is on better terms with. You don't want laywers pointing fingers at you for being sympathetic with a Whacko nation.

What about a demand based rotation system? Alternatly hand out two mirrors, and then rotate those mirrors to the back of the stack after a certain random number of hits. Assign 'bonus points' to servers on fast connections or in untouchable countries, and have them 'rotate up' more often. Additions to the list could be made real time, and deletions just seconds before the link was to be used, i.e., ping the site to make sure it is up before rotating it in, delete from list on timeout.

Yeah.. I had a mirror here, but they've had a RAID failure and have everything after 't' down for a day or so.

Wow, who can forget the Tandy Color Computer III? That thing was nifty...or it was when I was ten years old and just learning programming. That thing had analog inputs, so you could even do video editing on it. MS Disk- BASIC v1.1 and the 512K of ram. That thing was fast too...of course having the OS/programming language in ROM and almost never having to do disk i/o helped. I won't deny I played a lot of games on that thing...but I wrote most of them :-)

I still remember the last issue of Rainbow mag. It had dwindled from a spacious glossy color magazine to a small newsprint production. What a sinking feeling I got...oh well. After that my CoCo went unused, and I spent all my time learning DOS, C++, and how to use a BBS. The world was bigger then.

My Opa still has programs on his Acer laptop that he copied from the CoCo. How? He spliced together a mutant serial cable and did a straight dump through the port using a terminal program! He had to do some fiddling on the CoCo copy program to keep it from dropping characters, but now the programs are all safely migrated to GW-BASIC (!!) He is amazing...he still writes database programs in GW-BASIC that take up three to five floppies, including data files! Somehow the 640k limitations of DOS are powerless to stop him.

The 80's were quite a decade. I can still remember that bright, flashing cursor against that ugly nuclear green background. Oh well, it's the nineties and the world has moved on...whoops I guess we're in the aughts or the naughties or the 00's or whatever.

We would like to point out to all of the mirror sites with things like "fuck the lawyers" on them that it is because of a generous group of lawyers that we are still here. These lawyers are working for free (or much less than they could get by going over to the Dark Side) and don't deserve this kind of abuse.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

Explanation on legality of this information

The software (source as well as binaries) offered on this site can be freely redistributed because it was published under the GNU General Public License. The purpose of this software is not illegal copying of DVD disks. It is meant to provide information necessary to be able to program a DVD player for Linux. To do this, the CSS system needs to be incorporated in the player. Recently the (very weak) DVD content scrambling system was deciphered, freeing the way for a Linux DVD player. The CSS system is not a copy protection system, since it does not prevent copying of the disk. Writing information about the way an encryption scheme functions is completely legal. The source code and binaries on this site are completely legal too, since they contain no code from the DVD consortium or its members. The sources and programs on this site were written by third parties using clean-room reverse engineering methods which are (ready?) completly legal.

Attention www.rhythm.cx was hosting a list of mirrors for these files. That list of mirrors has been replaced with a page reading "This site has been taken down for legal reasons." Here's what the maintainer put on the site the day it was shut down:

NOTE (Thu, Nov 11, 12:17pm EST): I've recently been informed that a law firm which is likely to be one that would try get these mirrors taken down has been visiting this mirror site as well as others. With that said, there is a possibility that I may have to remove this site in the near future because like everyone else, I can't afford to go to court to fight it. Luckly, it seems fairly unlikely that any law firm will ever be able to get rid of all these mirrors at this point (there are currently 41 in 8 different countries and this list is growing every day). However, I have only seen very few mirror _lists_ like this one anyplace. If anyone has the resources, it might be wise to mirror this list of mirrors as well so that the right people will still know that these mirrors exist.

We have just been informed that the DVD Copy Control Association is seeking a restraining order against us (named as "Doe 28") for distributing DeCSS and linking to pages that distribute it and linking to pages that link to pages that distribute it.

Section 48 of this request states that we supposedly "have received notice through the MPA and refused to remove the information at issue". This is absolutely false! We have never received any such request (from the MPA or anybody else for that matter) and we obviously were not given the opportunity to refuse! Either Jared Bobrow needs to go back to law school or the DVD CCA needs to get a new firm. This is the kind of sloppy work that could get an important document thrown out.

Perhaps an entirely new species could eventually be created artificially for the purpose of birthing humans (we supposedly have the technology to create life now, it's just a matter of complexity).

I'd imagine it to be something large and simply shaped, like an organic washing machine.

It could be given complete samples of human DNA, or a large reserve of donated sperm and eggs, and could be designed to impregnate itself under certain conditions, such as a noticable, long-term change in local radiation patterns, etc.

If these creatures could encapsulate the human DNA in a manner similar to how most aerobic orgaisms encapsulate mitochondria (which are supposed to originally have been independent organisms), and were given some means to defend itself (armored flesh, the ability to burrow underground), the means to survive on its own, and finally the means to provide for the infants and children it produces, then it might be a way to ensure that humanity will survive a nuclear war, since the creation of new humans wouldn't be dependent on the survival of the old ones.

Although being birthed from strange, plantlike creatures might influence the creation of some very interesting religions among the new "crop" of humans, especially the worship of the strange "pod gods", and as the humans will have a "natural" answer to the question of their origins.

Oddly enough, I just put up a webpage a few days ago which explains, among other things, why this can't work. You can find it here.

The basic reasoning is that many (maybe even most) politicians aren't in it for the money, they're in it for the power. They don't want to get rich, just re-elected. Therefore, direct monetary contributions are not necessary to buy a politician, just convenient. If you ban soft money, direct campaign contributions, etc., then special interest groups will just start buying the commercials directly.

On my web page, I make a case for changing the way the House and the Senate are elected and run, though I seriously doubt that anything of the sort will happen anytime soon, since it would require some serious constitutional ammendments.

This card, or pretty much any other, is pointless unless they make their own ALSA or OSS/Free driver for it. Simply publishing the hardware details usually isn't enough to generate a sound card driver these days.

Those looking for a Linux soundcard should read the Linux Audio Quality HOWTO. Also, recently, kernel hacks have been posted that claim better latency in real time audio applications than is available with MacOS, BeOS, or any of the 31 flavors of Windows. I have links to draft versions of papers on doing so: email me if you're really interested. While I'm at the link game, I should also mention the Linux Music Station as important for anybody doing even batch audio processing with Linux.

Another month or so and we'll be able to turn a beefy Linux box into a complete music composition and performance workstation!

All this The government is out to get you stuff bugs me in a big way. Yea the govenerment is not perfect and they do abit of stuff that I don't like, but plese the USA is not and never will be a facist state.

It's not so much that the government is out to get you, as that the government intends to do nothing to stop the private sector from ferreting out everything they possibly can. Now, whether this is because Congress is in the private sector's pocket, as many would believe, or simply because they're clueless, I don't know.

On the subject of electronic privacy, a lot of people simply don't seem to realize that what applies to paper or speech does in fact apply to the internet as well. The Internet (capital I, folks) is a scary, untamed, and completely different place in the eyes of most decision-makers.

A threat more dangerous than the ones this article mentions is Congress' continual encroachment on the first amendment, and the constant attempts to limit the civil rights of minors. (I'm just waiting for them to pass a law making it illegal to be under 18.)
