This could mean that finally people with a small application base (web server, email, maybe a instant messaging server) can get together a share a colocated server somewhere. If we could get 25 or so people together, the cost would only be $10/mo or so...
Links? What is this Links you speak of? Never heard of it.. I've heard of Lynx, I use Lynx on a day-to-day basis; possibly you are referring to a 31337 web browser that you overheard a bunch of geeks talking about, and assumed it was spelled Links. Almost as bad as people calling Linux Linenux...
The Get-Rich-Quick Scheme Taco Should Have Used
on
Slashdot Updates
·
· Score: 5, Funny
Apparently CmdrTaco had a lapse in thinking..
Slashdot doesn't need banner ads or subscriptions. If Taco wants cash all he has to do is start selling karma.. Just think: Karma-whoring with a credit card.
Who here wouldn't pay a few extra bucks for a little more karma?
After that, he could introduce credit-card moderating.. $10 and you can take that pro MSFT comment from +5 all the way down to -2!
Everything is being hopelessly mismanaged here. We know a town has gone to pure hell when Joe-Blow's-Fast-Food-Joint-with-Mouse-Shit-In-The- French-Fries puts up a copy of the golden arches just to attract more business..
So much for the Internet.. Remember the good ole days when web addresses were http://www.server3.umystate.edu/~dude/web/computer.html
Maybe we should just forget ICANN, and start our own.root..
You guys don't really understand do you? This whole issue is not about some kid getting expelled for threatening to kill somebody..
This is about a kid who has a problem conforming, this kid didn't fit in, it is his fault that he is being picked on, and harrassed. That's right, he's the one to blame in this situation.
Nobody will ever get anywhere in live wearing a automobile tire on their head, nobody will ever get anywhere in life trying to be different. There is a system here, it's not called high school, it's called life.. This nation is trying to raise good quailty individuals in their schools; if these kids don't want to conform, they will be taught a lesson, they will be made to conform.
Just because poor Johnny doesn't want to be part of the group doesn't mean that poor Johnny's dad should come whining here..
My advise to Johnny, to Johnny's dad, to the rest of you.. Grow up, learn to behave like adults, and everybody will be better off.

The question should be: Why are we still using DNS?
When the Internet was young, there were a few servers, many had web servers and served pages, but the difference was that the URL would look like http://www.theirserver.theircompany.com/~myweb/sub ject/page.html instead of http://www.page.com/
DNS was never meant for all these virtual hosts, etc.
My advise: Use google. I call it GNS (Google Name Service). If you were looking for a company called Foobar LLC, you simply go to http://www.google.com/search?q=foobar+llc&btnI= and you are there, at their homepage.. Now replace www.google.com with google's IP, and you can boycott DNS altogether..
To compile mpg123 you download the sources, tar -xzvf them and them make install them.
Seriously though, the RPM of mpg123 is compiled to work on any machine, not your's. I had the same problems as you running on a P75, recompiled mpg123 and it works great. (Only takes about 20% of my CPU time).
It's sad to see Slashdot posting stories like this, it's sad to see Slashdot propogating garbage of this type. I though Slashdotters and the people who run Slashdot were smarter than this.
Basically, what this guy is saying is 'Let's put a opennap server on Sealand'. Why does he not save the hosting fees and run it from his dorm room?
This guy is not the only hope for Napster; the fact of the matter is that Napster Inc is dead, but it has served it's purpose, P2P music sharing will continue to survive, everything has been taken down to the grassroots and we don't need a high-profile opennap server running on Sealand.
And I thought this was slashdot.. I do believe that all unices come with something called 'telnet', the good ones something called 'ssh'. Oh, you also wanted graphical access.. try something called 'X'.
One more thing: Please stop embarrassing us all and degrading the quality of Slashdot.
Or rather, some things need people at the head of them. Going with CT's example, Slashdot needs somebody at the top, controlling it, posting the proper stories, etc; if every story that got submitted got posted, it would be pure hell.
There are other situations that don't need/shouldn't have people in charge. Keeping with the discussion forum theme, kuro5hin.org is supposed to be run by the users, yet, rusty can't let the general public have control, and he keeps doing things like posting advertisments on the site (these ads simply appeared one day, no consulting of the general public was done. It is a prime example of 'Mr. X is killing foo'.
Linux is Linus code, he's shown it to the general public, and they have said, let's change this, and this, etc, and he said 'Ok'. It's not your code, so stop complaining.
Actually, I find that piece ugly. If I were wanting a beautiful 'Hello World' I would:
Lose the '!'. Exclaimation marks are lame; there isn't really much to get excited about.
Tabs, need I say more?
Use a '\n'. I really hate when a program makes my console look like Hello world![james@jimbob ~]. Any code/coder that doesn't use line breaks should be whipped and beaten then sent back to Visual Basic where they belong.
I am getting sick of your views on soiecty, the geek-culture, and on how we are all incompetent to live as regular human beings.
You know nothing, you see one side of us, all you do all day is sit infront of your computer and read/. and your email. When you look outside, look through your small windows you see people walking around, you say those people are the outsiders, the ones not belonging to the geek culture, you say those people are out to get us, you ssay those people can never be our friends.
Now look at this statement from a minute.
he Social Darwinism of the tech culture, at its lack of empathy for human beings -- especially the technologically primitive and impaired.
The lack of empathy for human beings. Like duh. You have missed the point totally here. The tech culture doesn't care about human beings, they care about the ideas of human beings. Instead of being classified by what friends you have, or what clothes you wear, or the way you talk, you are classified by the ideas you express. So if you have technologically primitive you can't express your ideas, and therefore are a nobody.
And when we go out into the real world, we are classified by what friends you have, what you are wearing, and if you stutter or not. We exist in the real world, and we may even act like people in the real world, but we still have ideas and that is what counts.
For me, this is not true at all. It may be true that I don't read the code by default (and while compiling I wonder what some bored programmer has put into the code.. (esp. those cheezy Linux games that require svgalib and need to be suid..)). But when something goes wrong, I do wade through the code looking, and fixing the problem.. And that is what the source is there for, I have, and has used the power to fix it when it breaks. That is what really makes my mad about Windows, it's not that the GUI is butt ugly, or that I have to reboot everytime I change my DNS server, or even that it requires 32mB of RAM.. It's that when I get that awful blue screen, I am powerless, I can't do anything except swear alot and reboot again, hey I don't even have tech support...
When you have the code, you are responisble for what happens.
Netscape can survive on it's portal, but it doesn't have to pay it's programmers. In fact it gets it's code straight from the Mozilla project (but I am sure everyone here knew that...)
On the other hand, Mircosoft (IE), has been shovelling a lot of money into Internet Explorer, and there is no way they can support themselves on a measely portal...
But if you are building a *cheap* robot, why go with a Basic Stamp at all, with the Stamp, you are not only paying for the actual chip, but the flashy manual, and the 'easy-to-use' software.
You could get something much more powerful like a 68HC11, or 68HC12. These chips also cost less, infact you can build an entire MCU board for less than $20. That's compared to the $150 for BS2 + Board + Programming Cable.
You will learn more, and you can use a/real/ programming language like ASM, C, Forth, etc instead of being stuck with a varient of BASIC.
That was prolly flamebait, sorry, if you really to email my you know how to rearrange the URL at the top of the message
No you're not, historical M$ has never beat anyone to any market. That's not their business plan, they wait for the time to be just right and then pull the carpet out from under their competitors using FUD and TV ads. Millions where spent on that stupid 'Where do you want to go today' ad campain a couple years back. The only purpose of that ad was to cripple Netscape. Now we are seeing ads for MSN Instant Messagener (which for they who have never heard of it: It is a direct ripoff of AIM, and it doesn't even work properly.)
I reckon that soon, after Palm has spent millions developing this technology that M$ will start selling Windows CE at an exterme loss, just to get the market after the technolog has matured.

It's sad, very sad. Are there other places we can turn where we don't have to be pressured into buying cordless telephones or server space in Texas?

First make a ROT13 FS, and then make should all the important files on it are also ROT13ed..
Or maybe it would be better if I stuck to eating my pegniun mints, and sleeping with my stuffed tux at night...
