Re:Different, not better or wose
FTP over SSH is a good way to secure FTP, and there are a number of clients (Cute FTP Pro being one of them) that supports such implementations out-of-the-box, complete with drag&drop functionality, etc. (assuming of course they're using Windows, which is a fair assumption if they are a clueless end-user

Re:FTP?
GloaalScape, the comapany responsible for CuteFTP (one of the more popular FTP clients for Windows) has several products which can make use of secure FTP functionality. CuteFTP Pro has the ability to connect to several different types of secure FTP servers, as well as traditional FTP sites.
More recently they have also developed an ftp server product which is focused on security and encrpytion. I haven't used it personally, but for those of you looking for a secure FTP server for Windows (no jokes, please) it may be worth researching further. -
CuteFTP
Caveat: I personally use psftp/pscp from the PuTTY ssh toolkit, sftp/scp under Linux or Cygwin.
CuteFTP Pro claims support for SFTP and FTP over SSL.
Some of my users use it, I never have ;) -
Napster's business is *not* illegal.
Napster's users may be using Napster to commit illegal acts, but this is not Napster's fault. I suppose now we should sue GlobalSCAPE, the makers of CuteFTP because it allows users to commit illegal acts as well (or I suppose nobody trades warez by FTP, do they?).

I for one, am upset
Listen, I know that there isn't a whole lot we can really do to stop this kind of crap from happening.
But guess what, I'm not going to go buy that Filter CD that I was planning on getting this weekend or the next. In fact, I don't think I'm going to buy another CD for a long time.
I know it is tough for people to get outraged in this day and age. There are few things that people can't see both sides of. I would like to see people get outraged at what is happening with Napster now, but I realize it isn't going to happen.
In the meantime, here are some programs to use till Napster gets put back online, if ever:
(I did not include GNUTella because that is the biggest bandwidth hogging, least productive program I have ever used in my entire life.)iMesh - Nice but not too popular
CuteMX - The guys that brought us CuteFTP
FreeNet - This has promiseBtw, anyone else all of a sudden notice that RIAA Sucks is down?

5000 user max
ID software (the people who brought you quake, doom, etc.) also have a 5000 user limit on their FTP servers. To get around this, rather than clicking on a link in IE and getting a too many users message, I use CuteFTP. It says too many users in the log and tries again. It tries forever (unless you quit or stop it) and I can usually get in to any FTP server after about 2 minutes. Much easier than clicking on the link 100 times like a monkey would...
