Interesting site - Space Islands.
Many people have mentioned that NASA just seems to be lingering, not really accomplishing much now in comparison to times of the past, or that what they are accomplishing now is heading in the wrong direction. An AC posted a reply with a rather fascinating link to this site that talks about an idea that uses the external tank (ET) of the space shuttle as a structural component in space for creating "Space Islands". I thought this topic should be given more light here instead of being buried several levels down in the comments. The structures could house many people and huge amounts of experimental and self-sustaining equipment and processes, using several ETs linked together that NASA throws away after each SS launch (they partially burn up in the atmosphere after being let go and then crash into the ocean near Hawaii). The site is somewhat old (they make references to the upcoming 1996 presidential election, heh) but the information seems that it could still apply. One of the key ideas behind this process is that we have already spent almost all of the energy required to place these ETs into orbit (and in the site's words, the ETs are actually "nudged back down" to begin burning up in the atmosphere and crashing into the Earth). The ETs are not released until the SS is approaching its 200 mile orbital altitude, the boosters have been released, and the SS is operating on its own engines. Other ideas include creating artifical gravity by spinning the structures (the ETs are proposed to be formed into a circle, where the actual living and operating spaces would be placed in the radial direction on the arms of the circle), and the ability to move the structures through the solar system (to, say, Mars) and then use transport vehicles to drop down to our destination once in orbit around the desitnation. Sounds like a great idea to research to me unless major flaws have since been discovered that would impede such a design. -
Re:What A Mess...
The Space Islands Project -- their website looks defunct now, but what a terrific idea! Great post, by the way!

Re:Hrm
I agree, and even before my qbasic days, there was Logo.

Go back before that
Take a look for yourself.
Before movies they worked for Marvel Comics and it shows in their cinematography.

You need a man's case!I don't see the point. There is no decision on this stuff. For your home office, you need something elegant, like this, I'm partial to the burled walnut my self but the oak is also nice. It's a fine looking piece of machinery for your home study. It's something the whole family can be proud of and appricate. You could put it next to your TV in the entertainment center and the kids can play on it.
If that's not you then there are two alternatives, the SuperMicro 760a with 400W option pack, it comes with 4 fans! (uuugh uuuuugh uuuugh oooogh) or the monster, make sure you get the wheels. Be careful if you get the monster, I wasn't wearing my weight lifting belt when the UPS man came and I hurt my back lifting the box trying to get it inside my house. It's solid steal and can push 500W, make sure you get the wheels too! While they haven't announced it yet, I understand that they are building a special pad you can place on top the monster so that it doubles as a weight bench because it's that strong. These two are for the "home office" where you need something a little bit more industrial.
Then if it is for the actual office, I think rackmount are the only way to go. The style and convience make it very compelling. I recomend all steal or all anodized aluminum racks and mounts. If you get the right kind of rack you can also mount an oscilliscope in there so it looks extra cool. Sure you could have some sort of apple macintosh styled case with one of the LCD thin monitors but that's only if you want to look like some kind of feminine-MBA-anti-programmer wuss. If you're a real engineer you have an office that doesn't have carpet on the floor cause it's raised, has bare concrete walls, and your computer live in a rack and have handles on the front so you can pull them out to work on them.

FAKE-NO, Fraud!
This is the dumbest fake I have ever seen? When the html is soo anoying you cna't even read the text because of the layers, how are most people suppose to figure out it's a fake?
Wooden cases ARE made, by a few people, including IE NET, and I find them a fairly cool thing, in thier own way. So, I don't see the humor in spoofing something that is real. I mean, it's not a stupid idea, it's a cool idea. And it's out there.
Someone might have to explain what is suppose to be funny about this to me... Like, would it be funny if I put up a site that said I was building and selling MIPS servers, and did elaborate html, with photos and details, but I didn't really make or sell them? I don't think it's funny, I just don't get it. It's stupid.
