Does Google support IMAP yet?
My University is switching to Google. One of my concerns is that I really like my desktop clients (alpine and thunderbird) and prefer IMAP. While gmail is an excellent web-client, I don't really use my gmail account that much, because it doesn't offer IMAP & POP is both "flaky" and limiting.
Does google's hosted service offer IMAP? Or are there plans to in the near future? -
Re:It's about time
Next thing they'll do is start commercial breaks in the middle of the movies.
They already do! Have you seen The Island? It was a nonstop 2 hour commercial break! So kind of Michael Bay to just whore out his audience like that.
And the studio wonders why nobody went to go see it... -
Peoplesoft @ Northwestern U
My university uses Peoplesoft as a vendor; we use them for class scheduling and managing class documents and communication. But they output some of the shoddiest HTML I've seen in a long time. It's a strange mix of HTML and CSS, and obviously hasn't been tested except on one browser. It's been published in our school's most-distributed newspaper: Use IE to avoid problems. Our school's course management system is one of the more infuriating sites around. For instance, hitting enter in a form doesn't submit the form. Rather, it reloads the page. And blanks all of your entries. And you can't stop the reload.
I have a serious problem with Peoplesoft's products.
</rant>I don't know or understand all of the stakes involved in the acquisition or lawsuit, but I have this to say: I can only hope that Peoplesoft cleans up its act (read: HTML output). I don't like having to use other people's computers when Firefox doesn't know how to deal the poor output.

oprah?
this isn't much of a surprise, as an oprah class has been in the works for awhile...

You think 5% is bad?
You think 5% of total bandwidth is bad? Try up around 20%! Northwestern University in Chicago banne d access to Napster because it was sucking up nearly 20% of their bandwidth. My college, the Illinois Institute of Technology, never had a problem w/ the bandwidth usage, but the RIAA did come in and threaten to sue if the school didn't shut the student-run MP3 servers down. There's now a special rule that expels any student who runs an MP3 server on the campus network. Hmm, I wonder if the RIAA considers Napster an MP3 server.

Nanotechnology - on campus
Northwestern University is currently in the process of building a new chemistry building specifically for nanotechnology. It has been named the "Center for Nanofabrication and Molecular Self-Assembly". Here's an article on the whole business.
Unfortunately, I work in the building that they're tearing down for this...
