actually, they are linked on the site but not on each particular model's page in the database (i think they gave up on updating the links)
1) on the front page click "router database"
2) then on the sub-menu that opens, above the line where you type the router model, click on "Other downloads" ( http://dd-wrt.com/site/support/other-downloads )
result: you're now viewing the ftp space, mapped on the website

Here's an idea
Try a google search for "Captive WiFi Portal".
That's the term you want. Get yourself a DD-WRT compatible router and install one of these packages: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Captive_Portal

Re:Still kickin
Have a look at this change from just 2 days ago about inadyn.
http://svn.dd-wrt.com/changeset/17805
I'm pretty sure that DD-WRT does currently work with no-ip because many people flocked to it when dyndns changed their policy to only allow 1 free name (which also broke compatibility with DD-WRT's old inadyn) and I haven't heard any recent complaints about it being broken with no-ip, so you may just not have configured it correctly. Search for an answer in the forum and if you can't find an answer then make a post.

Re:Tomato
Misinformation.
Latest versions for DD-WRT is June 2011, while the latest version for Tomato TomatoUSB was released November 2010.
Not sure what is meant by "unofficial", since the entire project is is community driven. Also, Tomato is only available to a severly limited set of routers, not including the mentioned WNDR3700, as far as I know.
-
A mixed recommendation: WNDR3300
DD-WRT is very stable on my Netgear WNDR3300, but the CPU reaches 100% usage at relatively low throughput. See here for some benchmarks recorded by another user.
I'm looking to get a better router and to OpenWRT in the near future. (The amount of writable flash on my router is too small to have a usable OpenWRT install with a JFFS2 partition.)
-
Still kickin
DD-WRT is not dead but the developers work in the strangest of ways and can't be coaxed toward sanity. If you browse the file directories on the server (many links in the DD-WRT forums) then you can find updated beta builds. The beta builds that we forum moderators recommend is getting old but that is because the newer builds have several major bugs, but you're free to run any build you want.
Just look at the DD-WRT Trac for proof that it's still being developed.

Check the list
Could you not just check the list here:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices
and go with your favourite supplier of quality hardware? Also, bear in mind that some of your connected equipment isn't and can't be N-enabled (PS3 it think from memory). Therefore, you'll want something that can gracefully handle both G and N at the same time (ideally as separately configured wireless networks).
-
WNDR3700
I have seen the WNDR3700 recommended as being a good option. The hardware itself is relatively powerful, with a 680MHz processor, 64MiB RAM, and 8MiB flash. The 4 internal+1 external RJ-45 ports are gigabit. It costs US$120 from Newegg.com .

Re:People still use dd-wrt?
Fuck dd-wrt. Hasn't everyone switched over to openwrt or tomato these days?
I'm a Toamto-holic. dd-wrt just would not work properly on my Cisco/LinksysWRT160N V3 despite careful configuration changes etc. In frustration I installed Tomato and it worked first try right out of the gate. I had also used it on an older Linksys router and it never gave me any grief. Its features cover off my needs and it's been completely hassle free. Just my own experience.
Just an FYI: Newer routers typically need the NEWD2 wireless drivers which old DD-WRT doesn't have. The DD-WRT homepage hasn't been really updated in I don't even know how long and doesn't make any mention of such things. I wrote most of the WRT160Nv3 section of Linksys WRT150N & WRT160N - DD-WRT Wiki after I got mine working and I've never had a problem with it like I had with old WRT54G's. I've never used Tomato and didn't know it was even compatible with the later Linksys models, but if you ever want to give DD-WRT another shot that guide will get you through it.
I've never had a problem using the latest release from ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24-K26/. The current latest isn't actually a global release. Go to 17084 and download the one labelled WRT160Nv3.

Re:Open-Source my ass!
Since when has dd-wrt been "Open Source?" It's very much closed-source. OpenWRT is actually open source, as in, you can download the code, modify, and compile it yourself. dd-wrt is closed, and often includes proprietary drivers.
the source IS AVAILABLE and has always been.
svn co svn://svn.dd-wrt.com/DD-WRT
Just because you've checked binary blobs for wireless drivers into a source control system, and made access to the source control system public does NOT mean it is "Open Source." Good luck modifying a bcrm47xx driver in dd-wrt! Hope you like to edit in hex or binary.
In summary: Not Open Source.

Re:Speak of the devil
My provider isn't doing anything as far as I can see, even bittorrent runs at full speed. I think you may be thinking of the priority bit on IP6 traffic, because QOS at the router level is different http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Quality_of_Service#Priorities_explained .

Re:Check your radios, folks
As a happy DD-WRT user for users, with many SO-HO routers and LANs to my name, I never buy any routers unless it shows up on the DD-WRT router support database first. To do anything less is probably a waste of time.
http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database
BTW, how is this word actually pronounced? Does is sound like rowter or rooter?

Re:version clusterfck
Please upvote this -- there's been a longstanding issue with the searchable "recommended" firmware being wrong in many cases.
Check out this excerpt from a thread in the Broadcom section of the forums for proof:We are very aware of the confusion users have finding builds. The Database was intended to simplify the process but "NewMedia-NET GmbH" has done a poor job of maintaining the Database. We forum moderators have already brought it to their attention long ago and they have begun asking for our feedback before uploading new builds to the Database. For the time being there are still bad builds in the Database and it is still recommended by the forum moderators to use our recommended builds in this thread. When all the kinks are worked out of the organizational process to select builds for the Database then this thread may go away.
sticky'd thread dated May 16, 2009, with first post updated June 9th this year.

Re:Open-Source my ass!
The majority of the source is available, but FOSS zealots love to complain about a number of binary blobs that exist within the DD-WRT source tree. There are also special versions of DD-WRT only available by purchase.

version clusterfck
My experience with DD-WRT for the WRT54GL has been less than optimal. After much tinkering it's stable with the features I want, but it took quite some effort.
If you're considering installing DD-WRT, know that there's a good chance that the "stable" version listed on the main site is probably not your best bet, nor is whatever the router database suggests. Instead, hit up the forums, find the relevant forum for your hardware, read all the way through the sticky posts marked "READ ME" (in the case of WRT54GL the "peacock thread") and if you still feel like going for it, then by all means do.

Cisco E3000
DD-WRT support for E4200 is still experimental for the moment. Your best bet is E3000. I've set up two of them in both of my homes - as long as you include the stability tweaks (documented here under "Useful Tips") you'll get really fast and stable Wi-Fi. I've been able to regularly get 148Mbps with the 5GHz 802.11n connection.
-
TP-Link WR1043ND
TP-Link WR1043ND where you can load also a choice of other firmwares.
And it's cheap! -
Re:WNDR3700
really slashdot? Slow day?
Agreed. Aren't their better places to ask for the best gigabit 802.11n router supporting DD-WRT and OpenWRT? Not really "News for Nerds" or "Stuff that Matters". I'm sure any number of a hundred forums would be better, maybe the dd-wrt forum or openwrt forum would good places to start since you require a router that support both of those.
-
Or save yourself some money if you know networking
Buy a router and put DDWRT on it (lots of advantages, certain routers well supported) then use one of the LAN ports as your WAN port
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Dual_WAN

dd-wrt
If your router supports dd-wrt, it has this option built in. You may need more than one router for this. I've never tried it, but there's info about it here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Mesh_Networking_with_OLSR
-
Re:Software / Firmware
Alternative firmware or BIOS would rarely be useful. Working, less buggy firmware and BIOS on the other hand would be really nice.
Au contraire. Several alternative firmwares were/are available for the WRT54G series of wifi routers that have basically allowed linux to be run on them.
-
Re:NAT traversal in practice?
DD-WRT does support IPv6 and has some setup info here:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/IPv6While the native firmware may not, OpenWRT and DD-WRT bring that support to a lot of routers.
When you sign up with a tunnel broker, you get a ridiculous number of IP addresses assigned to you (you get a whole subnet). So I think once people get the hang of it and their are rubber stamp solutions available, NAT will die off.
-
Re:My ISP doesn't offer IPv6
See my comment later in the post here. You can get a free IPv6 tunnel from http://tunnelbroker.net/ if you have a router/firewall capable of establishing a GIF tunnel. pfSense (2.0 with the IPv6 code branch), m0n0wall, and DD-WRT and friends can do this.
-
Re:Kinda useless link.
The links are pretty useless, if you're looking for more information. They simply put you on the actual site being hosted on the ATV. While that's interesting, and it'll be great to see if we can Slashdot it, it's not informative, nor does it really discuss the project or talk about a how-to.
Which is really too bad, surfing around Mac Mini Vault doesn't yield anything about the project, just -that- it exists. Can anyone else find info on the thing?
Besides a DD-WRT based router will do pretty much the same job without having to fight the manufacturer every step of the way.
Not to mention it's half the cost and there's a long list of supported devices. -
Re:again?
I have four WRT54GL routers running DD-wrt.
Not a damned one of them can remain stable and online for more than an hour, except when configured as a simple wireless bridge device.
Just install network traffic loggers on each machine. Do some simple math at the end of the month.
Try a WRT160N. Make sure you get a v3 (any new one should be a v3, but make sure) and follow the instructions here: WRT160Nv3 Instructions - DD-WRT Wiki and get the latest version from here: ftp://dd-wrt.com/others/eko/V24-K26/. My router's uptime is 73 days, and the last downtime was due to a power outage.
If you don't want to get a new router, do some searching on the forums. The "official" database of "official" firmware versions that you find on the front page isn't very comprehensive and isn't well-maintained. They also absolutely refuse to put up experimental, but perfectly stable, builds on it. It took me a while to find Eko's NEWD-2 builds, but I was very happy once I did. I used to have a WRT54G with DD-WRT and it crashed almost daily due to lack of memory.

Re:again?
Which version of the DD-WRT firmware are you using? Unfortunately finding the most stable version can be a nightmare. But unless you're running a version suggested in this thread I would consider upgrading. Make sure you read all relevant information before doing so, of course.
