Re:Thanks for the reference
1) Thanks for the reference, I'd always wondered about that. What song is it from?
It's called Stuart.
2) I think the problem with your theory is that it was already (at least partially) flamebait in the original context. Flamebait is flamebait, even if it has a pop-cultural basis.
No, it was +5 funny in its ORIGINAL context. The song (a story really) was meant to be funny, like all their other songs. If you want anti-flamer flamebait try some Republican party speeches.
3) "The Mods REALLY hate the Dead Milkmen." => You ignore Hanlon's Razor.
Not really. They don't like the Dead Milkmen and are therefore stupid. There I said it.
:D Either way Hanlon's is irrelevant to the observation.4) Even insightful, informative comments which are unconnected to the topic of the article are fair game for Offtopic mods. That would, of course, include this comment.
Wow. Just
... Wow. So a joke about martians is offtopic in a slashdot article about martians. Typical /. moderation logic; this only confirms point 4. :D -
Re:It's the gamers! The gamers and the DOD!
Flamebait?
Sheesh... turn in your geek card, mod!

"And the Gray Aliens"
No no no... GAY aliens! They're in it with the queers! They're building landing strips for gay Martians! I swear to God! You know what, Stuart? I like you. You're not like the other people here in the trailer park. -
Re:Q: Are we not men?
Long answer short, NO.

God, I thought I was the only one. I played "Stuart" (CD purchased legally :-) for one of my co-workers and he agreed that it explained quite a bit about my personality. Been listening to Milkmen since "Bucky Fellini" around '88 or so, seventh grade I think.

DEAD MILKMAN BASSIST FOUND DEAD THIS MORNING

Missed opportunity
GarageBand looks okay and all, but they totally dropped the ball on the name. For one thing, they broke then "clever" iName scheme that the rest of the iLife suite uses. For another thing, they missed a chance to get an oblique 80s punk rock reference, which clearly all software should aim for. How could they have fixed this?
iRock
Or if they wanted to go for that trendy leetspeek "we meant to mis-spell that, thankyouverymuch", they could have used...
iRockz
Is it too late to go put new label stickers on the packaging, and to change out the strings in the software? I hope it's not too late...
Joe - Wow, Pretty good Jim Morrison impersonation there.
Rod - Yeah, I hope those guys have a good sense of humor and don't take us to court. Joe - Uh, what's the court?
Rod - Never mind that,
Joe - Oh, you mean like the People's Court?
Rod - Well, that's another story; the important thing here is you gotta ask me how I'm gonna get down to the shore.
Joe - Uh, how you gonna get down to the shore?
Rod - Funny you should ask, I've got a car now.
Joe - Oh wow, how'd you get a car?
Rod - Oh my parents drove it up here from the Bahamas.
Joe - You're kidding!
Rod - I must be, the Bahamas are islands, okay, the important thing now, is that you ask me what kind of car I have.
Joe - Uh, what kinda car do ya' got?
Rod - I've got a BITCHIN CAMARO!

Of course, they _can't_ support Linux.Microsoft is walking the thinnest line on this one (with apologies to The Dead Milkmen). On the one hand, they have to make nice to the anti-trust folks and say, "No, really, Microsoft doesn't have monopoly power. Just look at the little upstart OS Linux, ready to come and eat our lunch." On the other hand, the corporate message is made pretty clear by "pundits" like Ed Muth:
The problem with that is there are fewer applications available for Linux, there's no long-term development road map, and there's a higher technical risk in using it.
What this really means: The problem with Linux is that Microsoft Office isn't available for it, there's no FUD team hyping it, and MS tech support (such as it is) won't bail you out if you get yourself in trouble with it.If Microsoft doesn't want to make a seriously embarassing admission - namely, that there are valuable applications out there for Linux - they can't afford to consider Linux as a development platform, unless they don't consider Office to be an application with a signifigantly large following.
