Re:Google's competitors
400$/month is expensive: I got a 2Ghz server with 160 Gb, 1Gb RAM with unlimited bandwidth, and total control for less than 40 euros in France: http://www.dedibox.fr/ I'm sure there are alternatives elsewhere...

Includes a FREE "bandwidth quota exceeded" banner
I find $99 quite excessive considering the only things I've seen on a
.Mac blog are the "bandwidth exceeded" banner because it was linked in from Digg or Boingboing.
What's the point, then?
If you want raw storage and unlimited bandwidth, Proxad offers dedicated boxes with 160G of storage, complete administrator access for 30 EUR a month. No filtering/shaping whatsoever, 100Mbps ethernet connectivity per box. They have plenty of bandwidth, being a major ISP that basically only offers (unthrottled, unmetered, unshaped) 28 Mbps ADSL links. I don't think you can order this directly from the US, but I believe there's 3rd party services that resell it. I use one of those boxes to download Democracy Now's torrents, and I routinely reach 3MBps (that's megaBytes) of upload speed. -
Maybe they're just doing something wrong ...
My ISP gives me 20M/1M unthrottled DSL for 30 euros a month. I can max it all the time with no problem. They also sell dedicated boxes with 100Mbps ethernet in their datacenter, unlimited bandwidth, 1G RAM 160G HD. If you look into their infrastructure, well
... they did what it took. It took a lot, but they're profitable. The thing is, they did'nt spend much money on marketing or advertising -- they did, however, invest a lot in R&D. They designed their own set top boxes, DSLAMS and hosting appliances. They bought out or rented gigs after gigs of backbone.
In the end, trying to castrate your users is going to cost you a bit of money, and more importantly, a lot of credit. -
Re:good idea, still too expensive
Sounds like you could use a Dedibox from http://www.dedibox.fr/ They Offer a dedicated server with 160GB of HD, your OS of choice, 100MB bandwith and unlimited data. You can SSH, FTP, VNC, whatever you want. How does that sound? Price is 30/month.
This is very interesting to me; I was looking at virtual hosting a short while ago but I could not find anyone that offered enough space to backup my data (I'd be looking for 120gig minimum).
Are there any English language equivalents that offer vast storage and decent bandwidth?
PS the 30/month is Euros, pretty reasonable given I was almost willing to pay around 20 euros pcm for 4 gig just to backup the most important stuff.

ultra-low consumption dedicaced servers
French Iliad SAS (the parent company of the ISP Free) just started a cute server renting business in a former Exodus datacenter.
The point of interest is that servers are fanless, built on low-consumption VIA processors, and consume about 20W/server.
That should make the cost of operation much lower than traditional hosting...
