Re:The only solution ...
Also useful are BHODemon http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm and CWShredder http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_d
o wnload.html And run the AdAware and Spybot scans from safe mode. Also, switch Spybot to advanced mode and look at tools->system startup. Scrutinize every item there. If its spyware delete it, if you're not sure its safe uncheck it. -
Nothing is untouchable...
BHODemon should let you peak at your browser help objects and remove those that don't belong.

Preventative measures
As heavily as I use SpyBot and Ad-Aware, there have been few preventative measures until I found SpywareBlaster. It behaves somewhat like a hosts file, and also blocks cookies from websites. It even works nicely with Firefox/Mozilla.
BHODemon is pretty helpful too, though it's finely focused on BHOs, but that's enough. Works with SP2 just fine (it detects SP2).
My folks are able enough with computers, but I don't plan to put HijackThis in their hands anytime soon. If it's something that safe mode, SpyBot and Ad-Aware won't fix, they'll need to call me anyway. -
Re:Coming events
So should I just stop doing online banking at work because the computers happen to use the most popular operating system and browser in the world?
Nope, you should just be smart about your office desktop's security settings and perhaps even use the browser-help-object (BHO) listing tool noted in the linked article: http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm. I just checked my desktop, and it wasn't infected; so I'll still do banking online and continue to be wary of security issues. -
Here is how to get rid of BHO's
I posted this in another thread, but for those of you who don't know, you can get rid of BHO's with BHO Demon .
I run ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy but BHO Demon found some crapware that neither adaware or spybot found. -
Re:Can someone refer me to a useful BHO?
Anytime I hear of BHO's its always malware/spyware/adware...so when is it used for good? Seriously....
It's used for adobe acrobats PDF plug in for IE. I turn all of them off on my computer using BHO Demon -
Re:You can look under the hood yourself
Also look under the HKEY_CURRENT_USER branch, under the same registry keys. Some programs will hide some startups in there, knowing most people who know about HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE still don't know to look in HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Also take a look at your BHOs (Browser Helper Objects). This program should help you sort them out without having to dissect your registry: BHODemon
