Re:Feudalism and the new serfdom?
In this case, they all get to keep their jobs, they are just working on something new now, or maybe working on the same thing for new people. If they don't like it they are, of course, free to walk.
They may be getting told to walk. From drop.io's announcement:
"What this means is that Facebook has bought most of drop.io's technology and assets, and Sam Lessin is moving to Facebook."
That makes it sound like this is a one person deal.

Re:any legal issues with the on line file shearing
any legal issues with the on line file shearing system that facebook can be in for by buying one?
There is alot warez , movies and mp3s on them. The drop.io blog posting should have been included here (not as if people would read it anyway). Emphasis mine:
"Please download your information before Dec. 15 – we plan to delete it after that time. No user data or content will be transferred to Facebook, and we’ll send out e-mails to everyone to remind them about the service closing."
-
Transferred to Facebook?On drop.io 's blog:
What happens to information on drop.ioafter Dec. 15 ?
Any remaining data on drop.io will be deleted. No data will be transferred to Facebook.
Does this give a hint at what drop.io may help Facebook with, after all the data is deleted?
Share 'anything' is perhaps being taken seriously at Facebook.

Re:What a peek
If someone has a place they can host a pdf of the glyph page as pdf that might be helpful, but unfortunately I'm not up on how to coax open source tools to generate pdfs with embedded fonts (up until now I always used LaTeX for serious math) - anybody know of a good way? Also be warned that offering up such a page for a slashdotting will be inviting a beating for a server and bandwidth - that'll most likely be a pdf with over 400 pages plus the embedded font payload.
When it comes to fonts, most people expect to see something along these lines:
http://www.linotypelibrary.com/1563/universalmathematicalpi-family.html
http://www.typography.com/collections/index.php?collectionID=700007Put together some representative samples of the a handful of typical glyphs and build a few images along those lines. If you want to upload a full PDF with embedded fonts, throw it on Scribd or use drop.io and let them take the beating... they're good at it.

Re:Failure to appear in court...
From the English translation of the verdict:
Someone with an ip adress from the piratebay has visited this website.
Could you give an URL to that english translation? There seems to be a difference between this dutch version
http://www.scribd.com/doc/17846197/Vonnis-rechter-The-Pirate-Bay
and the english one you quote. In the dutch version the IP address belongs to piratebyran.
-V
I got the translation at http://drop.io/breinpaidforthis_english.
As I understand the Dutch text, the IP address did belong to Piratbyrån, but they are the ones who established TPB. (Note: Piratbyrån is not to be confused with Antipiratbyrån, the Swedish Anti-Piracy Bureau and copyright cop. Yes, the name of the former is a play on the latter.)
-
Unable to go != unwilling to go
I read the rough translation over at http://drop.io/breinpaidforthis_english
The only bit interesting was:
1.3 Since they summoned did not show up at the summoning they can now not fall back on the letter they have sent from 27th of juli 2009. Since they have said they were not going to be in court at the date appointed they can not fall back on not knowing about the summoning (article 142, lawbook of the netherlands Civil rights)
In most jurisdictions, if hold yourself out as intentionally disobeying an order of the court, they can throw the book at you in your absense. It all hinges on how the judge decides to interpret your letter of intent - they can be strict and litteral, or understanding and wide. Saying you will not be attending is very different to being unable to attend, regardless of whatever else said. Consider, "I am unable to attend the meeting because a family member has died and I am at the funeral at that time. I will not come." and "[at that time]. Please rearrange meeting". The latter indicates intent to come, whereas the former does not.
I find it hard to believe that they don't have prescribed methods of good notice - ie: in the UK good notice can be at their abode, registered address, or place of work. Only when you have "good notice" can you reply on preceedures in absense.

Easy solution to that ...
Step 1) Make a blanket rule on any IP resolving to a
.NL address
Step 2) The rule presents the users with the following message:Dear user
Thanks to a ruling from a Dutch court, we are required to prevent anyone from the Netherlands not using a proxy to mask their country from using our site.
Kind regards
The StaffAlright, the last link might be a bit much, but still

Re:quite needed...
While they don't benefit from Google's massive budget or standing with the dev community, drop.io has actually introduced some of this already. It's not quite an apples-to-apples comparison, granted, but present.io (extension of drop.io) explores a similar concept - synchronous filesharing and communication. It's less suited for group editing on singular assets, but is still a highly workable solution. Great for meetings.
Won't be able to hold a candle to Wave once the project goes live, but it's worth recalling that this sort of thing isn't entirely new.

The Machine the Won the War
Reminds me of Isaac Asimov's (very) short story of how computers won a major fictional battle. First, bad data was input. Then, the results were fudged. Then, the output was ignored by management. In the story, things turned out well. In real life, apparently, not so much. Text: http://drop.io/hidden/oyoyld5o6xkjlu/asset/bWJhNTgwLXRoZW1hY2hpbm
