Re:Can we please stop this nonsense?
What has imposed the cost to the industry is hiring incompetent coders, not any use of a specific language.
You keep making the mistake of telling yourself fairy tales. Your C evangelizing relies on articles of faith, campfire stories, and straight up mythology. Look what happens when a C programmer uses Rust. The things they thought they knew turn out not to be true.
Now go away and let people with actual insight handle this discussion.
I can appreciate that you are intimidated. But don't worry about it, kid. Just let the adults get on with the real work.

Re:A seed of an idea that never grew
It aligns with my mission to improve the reliability and quality of software everywhere by teaching programmers how to make more reliable software.
Tell me about it. Choosing better programming languages to start with is one of the most important steps to improving reliability and quality. It's amazing how much people want to stick with "what they know", even when what they know isn't borne out by the practical realities.
What I find disappointing is that even when you demonstrate that the same result can be delivered in less time with higher performance in languages like Pascal or Rust, C programmers still try to justify the use of C based on articles of faith, camp fire stories, and straight up mythology. It's intellectually dishonest.
Luckily, some C programmers are starting to see the light. We'll get there eventually. -

ZFS & apple
Late to the party, but for those asking about ZFS & apple, Adam Leventha (dtrace Sun engineer)l posted an exceptionally informative post about the history of this mess earlier this week:

Runtime
Any response to articles like this talking about how the runtime is crap?

http://dtrace.org/blogs/ahl/20...ZoL is very active and very up-to-date. All the versions and compatibility is in sync with Illumos (the main source of OpenZFS) and FreeBSD. You can create and move zpools between these 3 platforms seamlessly.
2 of the main founders and creators of ZFS itself (who used to work for Oracle and wrote ZFS) who now work for Delphix and continue to improve OpenZFS (started with the last open release of Oracle ZFS) in Illumos and have actually made it better than the now closed Oracle ZFS.
See how OpenZFS is actually better than Oracle ZFS now:
http://dtrace.org/blogs/ahl/20...Actively adding new features: https://github.com/zfsonlinux/... (Largeblock support to match the newer Oracle ZFS)
Etc...
Maybe if we pray to the ZFS gods Matthew will start implementing block pointer rewrite some day!
Anyways, OpenZFS is very active and kicking, and that includes the Linux port.
