Re:why would I write to that?
This is an enterprise level, SaaS-ready BI stack that includes in-memory analytics and able to connect to over 20 data providers (OLAP, SQL, Excel, Access, SAP, GA, etc.) written in ASP.NET with a HTML5 + JS front end: Dundas BI.
You don't know what you're talking about.

Re:Anyone uses Silverlight?
The BI platform used by Dundas Data Visualization, Dundas Dashboard, is in Silverlight. I use it on a daily basis. However, they are now offering HTML5 as well. But having a dashboard designer, in the web with a very rich experience, is one example where Silverlight has an advantage. But of course, as HTML5 improves/adopts, that advantage is going away, making plug-ins no longer needed.

Re:Why even mention silverlight?
The folks at Dundas Data Visualization have a nice Silverlight-based digital dashboarding solution. (Full disclosure: I used to work for Dundas, but I didn't do any Silverlight stuff there.)
Netflix apparently uses it, and, um, some other video-streaming things. And there are demos.
I think MS is showing some ADHD with Silverlight; they seemed really gung-ho about it, and then sort of fizzled out when it didn't immediately kill Flash and take over the net. And they appear to have boned their partners again by convincing them it's the next big thing, and then not actually getting behind it.

hmm, maybe..
if you've got an iis server/.net framework running somewhere, check this out
"Designed to display and monitor real-time data using a range of fully customizable Gauge and Dial types, Dundas Gauge is perfectly suited to developers building digital dashboards, manufacturing, financial, and other applications that monitor KPI's (Key Performance Indicators) and other critical data."
they would look pretty sweet on some big flat panels.. -
Re:Can I not have so many floating boxes?
For top-level windows it's called owner, not parent. Unfortunately the API for handling this is rather confused. See this article for example. Also take a look at how gdk_window_set_transient_for is implemented on Win32. See gdk/win32/gdkwindow-win32.c.

Re:...and more
MS didn't reinvent the UI with menus and toolbars in office. They subclassed the existing UI elements. Dundas actually does a good job of it. You get source with Dundas, as you do for MFC with Visual Studio. The Dundas stuff is pretty high-quality too; no hacks there.
