Re:If my Phone/DSL company (Verizon)
WiFi (and more) payphones are already happening. Check out Metrophone.
Their website sucks, so here's an article which talks about them a little. No mention of WiFi in either the website or the article but it's available. -
Re:He probably
right on - you may want to check out the story in the Bellevue Eastide Journal for more depth - it sounds like he and Bill worked out a deal where MS has first dibs on whatever they produce since they both determined that MS wasn't ready for Intentional Programming
.. makes sense - I've always seen Microsoft's strengths in unintentional random programming and pointless garden-pathed eye candy. -
Re:nice BBC article
Here's a local newspaper, The Eastside Journal. Redmond, WA, is in the Eastside. Check out the bottom of the page. Just about every page on the site has Tux.

From the actual article...From the first link:
If you went to sign up for a new account, as I did yesterday, none of those boxes would be checked. You would have to check them yourself to allow, or ``opt in'' to, the information sharing.
But if you already have a Hotmail account, guess what? Microsoft has checked two of the new boxes for you, allowing it to share your e-mail address and the other registration data such as your gender, occupation and birth date.
I've a long-standing Hotmail account, it gets about 20 items of filtered Spam a day (30 a day on weekends), plus another 15 a day that get through the filter. I certainly don't want any more. I only use the account when I have to provide a valid email address on a web form (cos I don't trust any business to keep my details private) but it's still a hassle clearing out all this junk just so the account will be usable. Oh, and when I was signing up, I listed my occupation as "retired" so that marketing companies might think that I have less money to spend than a working person and leave me alone...

The candidates are the people
While our democracy may have failed a bit, the candidates do, through extensive focus group testing, try to represent the people. Bush wouldn't say a word without his advisors telling him which demographic we're talking to.
So let's get it straight who Bush was talking to. Bush was talking to the Million Mom March. Bush was talking to the same Mom's who needed Microsoft's Digital Diva to explain to them how to send their email messages from their "cyberspace address" out over the "information superhighway".
He was talking to all the people who watched a high school full of children being led out by SWAT teams, the people who read newspapers and read about those two kid's obsession with the internet.
He was representing the great swath of Americans who just don't get it
My point is, don't blame Bush. Bush, as a C student, is uniuqely qualified to represent the vast and growing idiot demographic in America.
Blame the idiots. Think globally, but mock them locally.
-just a thought. -
Re:Why so little Linux in Seattle?
I'm doing my part to increase the visibility of Linux in the Seattle area: head over to The Eastside Journal. See Tux and Wilbur on the bottom right of the page? The Eastside Journal is a medium-sized paper serving the eastern part of King county (Seattle is in King county). It also serves Redmond, WA. Take a look at the page source for more grins. Bill Gates cannot escape Tux at home either: he lives on Mercer Island
