Re:Hey, the pirates can help
Don't know if you enjoy classical music or not, but eClassical sells DRM-free digital downloads at better than CD quality!
They offer 16bit CD quality FLAC downloads for their entire catalog and for more recent works also offer them at 24bit studio master quality. High quality MP3 versions are also available if your tastes are more pedestrian.
Should also mention that their catalog leans heavily towards the incomparable BIS label, which is renowned for the quality of their engineering. Being a Swedish company, BIS is also very big on Scandinavian artists and composers. -

Have you tried http://eclassical.com/ ?
They offer only mp3's, but at least they're DRM free. -
Re:I'm going to get crucified, but...
I would argue that if the RIAA is between a rock and a hard place, they should be left to do what everyone else does in a capitalist system: adapt.
Actually finding what you're looking for on either bittorrent sites or gnutella & co is a pain. I'll be damned if 95% of people with classical music share any Bach that isn't BVW 147, 565, or 582. As a matter of fact, I've accumulated about a dozen different playings of "Ode to Joy." Other than those and one of the Brandenburg concertos, good luck - you're gonna need it. I'd pay to not have to sort through trash results and get decent downloads rates reliably. Other companies have figured this out: E-Classical, Magnatune and of course Apple iTunes have figured it out. With EMI's selling of standard MP3s, I think they're beginning to figure it out. The ones that don't "figure it out" will go the way of the Dodo. -
another one missing
http://www.eclassical.com/
192kps format, no DRM what so ever. Good prices. No sigining up for memberships. Just buy your music, download, and away you go. No affiliaiton, just a happy customer.
As you might guess, all classical music, no pop, no rap, etc. While I lament the fact there is also no Led Zepplin, at least I can take comfort in the fact there is no Britney Spears at all. That alone makes it worth while to me. -
Alternative download sites
Magnatune.com and eclassical.com have all the music I care to download. They also offer free titles and the option to preview samples of the work. Magnatune provides flac and ogg files in addition to the usual mp3s.

Re:Easy...
So, as you might guess, I'm not buying any online music anytime soon...
That may depend on your preferences in music.
eclassical.com seems to fit most of your demands. They are trying out Ogg Vorbis right now, to see if the time is right. There is a few wma's left from the early days, but they are rapidly being replaced by mp3 encoded at 192Mb/s. And they heve a very generous guarantee! -
Re:cheaper higher quality music
If you're looking for classical music eclassical.com has been around for several years already. Most tracks cost $0.49. Mostly mp3's. No DRM.
