Slashdotter extension?
How does this play with the AJAX comments abilities of the Slashdotter Firefox extension?
-
Re:Question for other slashdotters
I tried it for awhile, didn't like it, and turned it back. It was too....different. I felt like I was missing comments. For the time being, the Slashdotter Firefox plugin seems to work well for me. AJAX-fied collapsible comments, and some nice other features, too. It chokes sometimes on deeper level comments and the expanding, but for the most part it works very well.

Re:You gotta be kidding me...
I can't speak for the pre-2006 Netscape, but as far as the current Netscape organization is concerned, I have to disagree with you regarding transparency.
* The former GM, Jason Calacanis, blogged extensively about Netscape and encouraged other employees to do the same. He also called out other industry big-wigs for "not having time" to blog about their product.
* Many Netscape Anchors, Navigators, and developers have an active blog where they write about Netscape and/or are available to discuss it.
* There is the official Netscape blog where we detail new and/or upcoming features and ask for discussion and feedback.
* Netscape.com holds a weekly chat when there is guaranteed to be an Anchor in attendance.
* As developers, we are encouraged to be active in the community; we haven't been given any explicit "gag orders," so we're free to speak for Netscape (as I'm doing now) if the need arises.
Can the above be said to be true for Digg, del.icio.us, reddit, etc.? I'd have to say that of all the current players in the social news space, Netscape is one of the most (if not the most) forthcoming and transparent about their operations. -
Re:You gotta be kidding me...
You make several good points that I want to respond to more fully, but I've got to run out, so I'll have to do that later. In the meantime, I'll put this out there: my e-mail address is chris@newnetscape.com; my screenname and other contact information is available at my website. Anyone who wishes to do so can contact me regarding issues with any of the Netscape websites or the Netscape browser; if I can't solve your problem, I can definitely get you connected with the right person.

Re:Sorry about that
anybody working at Netscape now was hired since then.
Both of you, eh? Does your imaginary co-work also live in New Mexico and use a GMail accounts?
Meh. At least the chick you hired to pose as your wife is worth a tug. Praise be. -

...but was unable to completely wipe out the information for those geeks with the Slashdotter Extension.
Coral Cache, Google Cache, and Mirrordot all remain stable in the face of the slashdotting... -
Re:Tried it, didn't like it
You can get that now with the Slashdotter extension. It puts a Javascript "Hide Replies" link at the bottom of each comment that lets you hide all of that comment's replies. It's really nice when the comment looks like it has a ton of replies and you don't care about any of them. Also, load comments below your threshhold without reloading the page, and some other neat features.

Re:Speaking of AJAX...
The Slashdotter Firefox Extension does that.

I just hope it doesn't break slashdotter extension
*Please* don't select a winner that breaks the slashdotter extension.
I haven't had a look at the code for the slashdotter, but I hope it's robust enough to deal with CSS changes like this contest suggests without breaking.
Unfortunately, robustness doesn't seem to be the general rule with Mozilla extensions, which seem to break with every upgrade or site change. Sometimes it seems as if half of the Greasemonkey scripts don't work any more because the pages they were designed to work with have changed.
The one the surprizes me the most is the Venkman JavaScript debugger. Usually developer tools are the first things that get ported to a new version of any platform because the developers are using it themselves, but for some reason, the Venkman debugger is frequently non functional on the latest version of Firefox.
Oh well. I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope this contest doesn't break slashdotter or that the extension gets updated quickly afterwards.
P.S. I hope you can't tell that SpellBound is broken on my installation of FireFox. -
Slashdotter Extension Incorporation
I'm not a designer, but my suggestion would be to somehow incorporate the improvements found in the Slashdotter Firefox extension (formerly, greasemonkey script).
The ability to load comments without refreshing the page (and losing my place in the overall thread) is wonderful, as is the ability to seamlessly Hide replies to an off-topic discussion that has gotten highly Modded.
That added flexibility does more for the design than anything else I can think of adding.

Re:Slashdot Extension
This is due to some changes made to Slashdot's HTML on March 31. The new version is compatible with the new HTML.

Re:Nice Idea, but No Thanks
There's got to be a better site for Firefox extensions.
There is. I'd also like to mention here that Slashdotter is at version 1.5 and now supports customizing the style for each Slashdot section separately. -
Re:"gay"
You can hide tagging, if you want to.
-
Re:The pink can be yours!
Or you could just download the newest version of Slashdotter, which has the Ponies theme supported out of the box.
Or you could just change the extensions.slashdotter.stylesheet preference in about:config to "fool". But that way, you don't get the bugfixes in the new version. -

No Bon Echo support?
I just downloaded Bon Echo and tested Slashdotter; it works, and I've uploaded a compatible version (1.2.2) to the Mozilla Addons site. It should be approved anytime within 1 day to 3 weeks (based on past experiences). In the meantime, it's available here. :( -
Re:Left in the dust
Gota version for FF 1.0.7?
I believe the only thing that wouldn't work on pre-1.5 versions would be the options dialog, which uses some new XUL introduced in 1.5. I may post links to modified versions of the extension on its homepage that will work with earlier Firefox versions, but they wouldn't have the pretty options dialog that the official version would have. -
Re:Firewall this...
I'm blocked by Websense from downloading this extension
If my site (efinke.com) isn't blocked, you can download the extension from there. -
Re:Aw nuts
But now I can't see tags anymore, even though I unchecked "hide tags"
Whoops. That'll be fixed as soon as 1.2.1 is approved by a Mozilla admin; in the meantime, if you like Slashdotter and want to show tagging, you can download the new version from my site. -
