EFnet Paralyzed By Vulnerability
An anonymous reader writes "EFnet member Fionn 'Fudge' Kelleher reported several vulnerabilities in the IRC daemons charybdis, ircd-ratbox, and other derivative IRCds. The vulnerability was subsequently used to bring down large portions of the EFnet IRC network." By crafting a particular message, you can cause the IRC daemon to call strlen(NULL) and game over, core dumped. -
EFNet Reaches 100,000 Concurrent Connections
Mortin writes "The largest IRC network in the world, EFNet, has set another world-record max user count after breaking an astonishing 100,000 concurrent users earlier tonight!" -
Oldest IRC Server Going Offline
Matty_ writes: "Looks like the oldest IRC server in continued operation on the Internet is going to be turned off for good. According to the server's MOTD, the server will be shut off no later than January 1. Aparently the University of Colorado can no longer support the software and hardware, as well as provide the network resources, specifically the extra bandwidth required for the various DoS (Denial of Service) attacks from which EFnet servers still suffer. They chose not to accept the liability and decided to retire the server." -
EFNet on the Rocks Again
Dragonsbane writes: "Things just keep getting better and better on EFNet. Already down to 30-something servers, the network has been hit with a huge denial of service attack, one which seems to have targeted the major hubs and open servers on the network. Information regarding the losses (six servers have been shut down in two days, one of which will not be returning) can be found at the network's news page. Having used EFNet for the last 5 years, I held on for dear life during the last bumpy ride, but I find myself wondering if the oldest IRC network can pull out of this type of situation a second time?" -

EFnet Hits Turbulence
Lots of submissions regarding a bumpy week for EFnet, mostly short on fact and long on rumor. Several high-capacity servers have either dropped off entirely or limited their connections to local clients due to DOS attacks. We got one good link about the situation; anyone else have more info? Is this a real problem or just normal roughness? I'm not an IRC regular these days but I've never seen a stable IRC network.
