Re:My experience
PHP is bad for long-lasting processes (uptime >1 month?)
[17:43] #mtxf# uptime Online for 325 days, 04:59 (background)
try getting the real eggdrop http://www.eggheads.org/downloads/
;)I have 4 of them running and they all have an uptime > 200 days
(not to brag or anything)
I also tried writing my own in C, i think it managed maybe half an hour of uptime? Sadly I never did get around to finishing it though, got bored.
Hey, stop stalking me.
You learned ASP, hehe. How'd that work out for ya?
Also, I hope you're earning a tidy sum from that online shop, I could sure do with a steady income off of something like that. I'm off to uni to study computer systems engineering (yep, I'm branching out into electronics - I figure that having a physical product to sell is gonna be a good thing with things going the way they are.)
I was gonna add some ontopic stuff here, but I'll save that for another post, where it'll have slightly less chance of being modded down.
cheers
Ps, you made me use html mode for the quotes, now i have to go and add p tags around all my paragraphs; i hope you're happy

Re:It's not just windows they're exploiting...
That is an Energy Mech bot. It used to be the most common alternative to the Eggdrop bot, but it is not nearly as well known. Most experienced IRC users preferred Eggdrop for various reasons. Energy Mech had a reputation for being very resource intensive.

Re:Maybe it's not the filesharing?
Maybe it's not everyone's beloved P2P being "illegal" or whatever.
Maybe it's the fact that torrents take a fucking ton of bandwidth?
True, people make it sound as though p2p is the only viable file transfer protocol in existence. Learn to use the net, newbs. ;)
Seriously though, if you want to do something really crazy, put up an ircd with an eggdrop bot. Technically, DCC is beyond horrible, but for moving files on a LAN it'd do just fine. You can also set the eggdrop up to listen for connections via telnet, and talk to people via its' party line, which could end up eliminating the need for the initial irc server more or less altogether. It's probably the closest you'll get to something entirely untraceable, since DCC can be tied to any port as well. -
Re:Flame on...
I'm not so sure about that. For sure there are Unix bots, but there are a LOT of infected Windows machines. We had several Win machines infected in my lab at my university. Also, if you check out The Eggdrop homepage (http://www.eggheads.org/), you'll see it runs on most platforms. Furthermore, I'm sure that these 10K+ botnets aren't all Unix machines...

Identification in IRC
It's been a while since I spent much time in IRC, but even several years ago we would identify channel ops with a bot (eggdrop, if I recall correctly). Giving everyone ops isn't necessary, either. It is simple to have usernames and passwords maintained and authenticated on a bot and to set the IRC channel to require members to be given a voice (by the bot upon authentication) to speak in the channel.

Re:Shell whores.
Oldest IRC channel control bot. The bot logs in, sits in a channel and manages ownership of the channel and protects the channel from take over. A bot of some sort is pretty important if some one plans to run a large channel for any length of time.
You can get more info here. -
Re:Shell whores.
It's an IRC bot - see the official site...

Legacy Eggdrops
I know of at least two older eggdrop bots that went broke. There was a nasty bug in older eggdrops that just assumed a 9-character uptime calculator.
This page shows what versions were affected. Yes, there were quite a lot of 1.4.x 'drops still around...

Eggdrops are legit
There's nothing bad about eggdrop bots. Eggdrop is a well respected bot to manage an IRC channel and are quite popular on all the networks. I myself have run a few and they're quite fun to play with. While there are eggdrops scripts aimed at more malicious uses, the vast majority of eggdrops are just used to keep the peace and keep channels organized. eggdrop homepage

Re:When you got Linux, was it because it was OSS?
I learned about Linux on IRC (first through shell accounts before actually installing it myself), and maybe it being open source wasn't the big part of it, but I know it was at least a factor. I used it to compile eggdrop and maybe a few other programs, and I thought that to be fun (and I still do). Not to mention the cool IRC client, BitchX.
