    Supports indexing docs on Windows shares directly (as well as HTTP crawling), supports hundreds of document formats (including exotic ones like dwg files), allows precise control over indexing process and allows access via Web Services API as well as browser.
    No limitations on number of users or documents and fully customizable search page.

    This is even more important when a search engine (appliance) is capable to crawl the file shares directly (not just over HTTP).
    EnterFind appliance (which I participated in developing) has this (still unique) feature and their clients were amazed by what the crawler can dig out. Especially in those "hidden" fields in the Office documents.

    exactly. A buddy of mine developed and now sells search appliance that can search network windows shares as well as web servers - EnterFind.
    it is not complicated at all.

    The impotent Microsoft search tools have been a blessing for many third-party vendors.

    My friend's company makes search appliances - www.enterfind.com.
    Basically it is a box you place on your network and you can tell it (via web interface) where your Windows (and others) shares are and how to get there and it goes and indexes document names and contents.
    Then users can use search page to look for them. The box has Web Services, Java and .NET interfaces for your own applications too.
