Re:VisiCalc
notably alt-X, ctrl-Y, and F1 still do essentially the same things they did in Wordstar.
That is because IBM had the sense to merge all the app vendors' different user interfaces on VAX and PC and came up with a standard that has been used ever since. This was more influential than any single software.

nerd-friendly mobile phone
You are badly informed. The update to the N900 is the N9 (Wikipedia, price comparison). It has been available on the market for over a year now.
You will not get anything better than this from Nokia anymore as the development teams are sacked. There will be no more official software updates for the N9, but the fan community picks up the ball because the OS (MeeGo, a Debian derivative) is quite hackable. I have installed the whole GNU and Qt developer toolchains and can develop both live on the device and cross-compiling to ARM from my laptop. It's also easy to flash alternative OS like Mer.
Some ex-Nokia developers formed a new company, Jolla, and have demoed their first product just a couple of days ago.

Re:Why is this a problem?
Gender IS in preferences. You can choose between male, female and unspecified. This is to customise UI on the site so it has the appropriate pronouns. You can do this all over the place, like this:
{{gender:Jimbo Wales|man|woman|person}}
(replacing Jimbo Wales with your WP username (or a template that substitutes the current user's name) and the words man, woman and person with wikitext that you want returned)
This is used quite a bit for Userboxes so that they can make it text in the userbox switch dynamically between "This user lives in London and [they like/he likes/she likes] travelling on the Underground" or whatever.
The problem with the preferences route is unspecified may be because you haven't set it or it may be because you don't want to set it (or you don't fall into male/female because you are transgendered or whatever).
There have been polls and studies done though. You can read about them on http://enwp.org/WP:BIAS or http://enwp.org/WP:ACST

Compare that with Ancient Egyptians
It is interesting that the primary concern about death in many ancient cultures was to ensure that wise and proper advice is given to the deceased for the afterlife.
The primary concern of modern culture is just the opposite: the impact the deceased person has after his death. -

Re:4th
(*) It should be noted that the USG has steadfastly avoided violating the 3rd amendment, and should certainly be commended for its restraint in this matter.
This is false (unless "USG" specifically means the Federal government -- I would argue that state governments are just another level of the U.S. Gov't)
ObTopic: Demanding passwords is evil!
In a constitutional context like this, one would normally only be talking about the Federal government, since the US Constitution is the document that defines that Federal government, but doesn't define the state governments. There is a concept of "incorporation," but that isn't actually *written* in the constitution, so the actual applicability of it in any specific context is unpredictable.

Re:Mr. Bob,
No, it's not the equal protection clause that forces the states to comply with the Bill of Rights. The framers of the 14th amendment intended it to be the privileges and immunities clause. Unfortunately SCOTUS neutered this clause over a hundred years ago and instead opted to incorporate the Bill of Rights piece by piece against the states through the due process clause.
Interestingly enough, Clarence Thomas recently "revived" the clause.
ObTopic: Did we really expect the MPAA, of all people, to say anything other than this?

Re:Why would Verizon care?
My biggest problem with Wikipedia is the direct source of stories like this. It's become a little pool and everyone is trying to be the biggest fish, for two reasons: First, that way they can create their own little kingdom of articles which they've "adopted", bullying people into a consensus which matches their own ideals/agenda. Second, they just want to feel important.
I should sleep now, it's after midnight, but Duty Calls.

Re:Google
Your ADD isn't my problem.
Don't whine about how I'm being "biased" or "not thoughtful" or something, I have ADD (either that or they let me have a Schedule 2 substance for no good reason whatsoever (don't start)).

While Censorship and restraint are very different issues. One I wish Wikipedia would learn when clicking on various biology articles. Oh I wonder what that illness is (MY EYES!!).

Re:I must be missing the point here
Is there an actual law on the books somewhere that restricts the sale of 'R' rated movies?

Re:yet another reason
FB is never gonna bother to provide IP logs in my defense for free? I want to see Zuckerberg defend against legal cases for this. This must already have ruined someone's day and gives me fear for remaining outside FB.
Sue the bastards and then subpoena the logs.

Re:ZoneAlarm still exists?
If a system is so borked you're mounting it via another computer, you might be better off just formatting and reinstalling.

Re:If it violates an amendment
And a Government without rules is not a democracy (or, more properly, a Republic). It is, by definition, a tyranny.
