Re:Incorrect - they're much the same
Wow. Are you rating up your own posts? 2nd-gen Pioneer drives are $246 at the same web vendor you've been steering people to to buy your over-priced Ricoh drive. DVD-R discs cost 1/3 of what you don't want to call over-priced ($3 versus $1 -- I'll pay $1 thank you very much). And who the hell uses RW discs in either format? Do you really like spending that much extra money? You must, you've chosen an over-priced underpowered format which is not supported by most DVD players. Kind of makes me think you have a conflict of interest in your assessment.

$246 for the Pioneer DVR-104 DVD-R/RW
Same place too. DVD-R discs are under a buck. DVD-RW discs under $2. Stop wasting your money.

$284 for a Ricoh 5125 DVD+R/RWFrom here. That's a better deal, for a faster drive too
:-)I've also seen DVD+R discs for under $3, and DVD+RW discs for under $5. Can't complain about that.

Re:I think this question will be decided
Blank DVD-R's are in the $1.00 (one dollar USD) range in bulk. About $2.00 individually. Look around. The A-04 Pioneer burner is to be had for less than $250 at the places with the lowest price (internal oem model, of course).
When I bought a Yamaha 4x2x6 CD-R/RW in 1997, the burner ran $500 (external, nice) and the discs were about a buck in bulk. For some strange reason CD-RW's (at that time) ran between $35.00 and $70.00 a piece. God damn patent holders. -
Adding a DVR to your machineThe SuperDrives are just plain old Pioneer DVR drives. You can get a Cheap SuperDrive for $254.49 here or keep checking DealMac.com for falling prices.
You should be able to slip this drive into a G4 in either it's available drive bay or by replacing your existing DVD/CDRW/Combo/CD with it. The only difficult part of installing a SuperDrives in an eMac would be getting the case apart and then back together. I haven't taken an eMac apart so I can't comment on it's ease but having taken many iMacs apart, I can tell you it's not super easy. If it's like the iMac, you'll have to get in there pretty far to get at the drive bay. The trick is to go slow, think about it and remember where all the screws came from!
If the thought of taking a machine apart and/or voiding your warranty makes you squeamish, you may be able to put the Pioneer DVR into a Piranha FireWire case for an extra $55. You should give them a call first and make sure this case can handle removable media drives and is fast enough for a DVR.

Cheap DVD-Rs
heck out http://ESBuy.com/. Pioneer DVD-R recorders at $260, with media at $3/disk.
I have a Pioneer DVD-R recorder - seems to record fast enough, use it under Linux, and I do md5sums on my created DVDs without any recording errors so far. Everything has worked just fine. I agree, though, if you need a lot of on-line storage, simply using IDE drives is the way to go. -
