Building Nautilus: Behind The Scenes
mholve points to this LinuxPlanet feature titled "A Sneak Peek at Nautilus from Eazel." Despite that title, it's not just a collection of bulleted feature lists and screen shots. Instead, it's a nicely balanced, in-depth look at the thought process behind the creation of Nautilus as well as a description and critique of the current preview. The article raises some interesting points about the complications that Eazel has found in trying to make Nautilus distribution-neutral: "In the future, I think we're going to have to look for a way to abstract the package system much in the same way we've abstracted the file system," [Darin Adler, Eazel software engineering honcho] allows. In addition, he notes that the diversity found in other areas of Linux distributions presents a daily challenge: "We try to get weirdnesses out of our code as much as possible, when we discover we've accidentally done something distribution-specific, we try to 'unweird it.'" -
Interview With Larry Wall About Perl 6
mholve wrote to us about an interview with Larry Wall [?] regarding Perl 6. Wall is, always, interesting to read. Warning - the text bit is short, most of it is video. -
Mohawk, An Apache GUI, Replaces TkApache
mholve writes "There will soon be another GUI interface for Apache available: Mohawk. Replacing TkApache with a slicker, faster and much more feature-laden interface, there is an open call for developers, comments, review." In most PC rags, the "lack" of a built-in GUI has always been a mark against Apache. It's good seeing more and more GUIs popping up to fill this real and perceived deficiency. -

Astronauts In Florida For Space Station Mission
Michael Holve writes: "It seems the ISS (International Space Station) is slipping 1.5 miles per week closer to Earth. Seven astronauts are set to use the Atlantis to push it 19 miles back out into space until mid-July, when the Zvezda module arrives, which was meant to keep the ISS in orbit and provide living quarters for three astronauts." -
R12K Debuts
Mike Holve, the guy with the cool website a lot of us have read, wrote in with a link to an SGI Press Release about the company using the new R12000 (R12K) processor running at 300 MHz in its Octane workstations. The chip is binary- and pin- compatible with the R10K, and from the press release, appears to be relativley inexpensive. Hey, I can dream, can't I? If anyone sees a press release about the actual chip, submit it and I will be sure to update the article. Update: 02/22 07:34 by J :Still no sign of a press release, but thanks to mmoore, we have a nice license plate mask. -
Batch of Linux Articles
Craig Sanders sent us a link to an article about (surprise!) Linux called The People's Revolution, which is a front page story from the IT pages in The Age, Melbourne's biggest newspaper. Mike_Miller wrote in to say that Rob Kennedy (of linux-howto.com fame) is starting a monthly magazine called Ext2 about (surprise) Linux. Josh Baugher wrote in to say 32 Bits Online is now changing their focus to be a (surprise) Linux oriented site. And lastly, mholve has written a nice bit on Advocacy for (surprise!) Linux. -

US Strikes Bring Down CNN/MSNBC Sites
Michael Holve wrote in and mentioned this, but I bet many of you noticed it too. Following the announcements of various warlike activities (that I won't bother mentioning here) both MSNBC and CNNs websites basically blew up. CNN apparently got over 20 million hits. I guess I was glad to know that it happens to people besides me. It makes me wonder about the stability of internet news every time that stuff happens. What do you folks think? Will we have to go back to TV every time major news happens, or will web sites catch up?
