Vertical Horizons Has What You WantVertical Horizons has the only portable MP3-CD player on the market for ~$120. (Pine has announced one for a while, but as far as I know it is only vaporware). You can read more about the player on their site. MP3.com also did a review of the player, at CES 2000 -- I cite the relevant section below.
New Horizon
One of the most anticipated products in the MP3.com Editorial camp went from vapor to reality as it made its debut at CES 2000.
Garden Grove, Calif.-based hardware outfit Vertical Horizon finally put the CD in portable MP3 audio with a line of portable MP3 CD players.
The two models displayed at CES play MP3 CDs and standard red book audio discs, and both are about the size of standard portable CD players.
Of course, thanks to MP3 compression technology, these players can play discs that contain more than 10 hours of music, rather than the 70-minute standard audio CD.
The larger of the two models includes a port for SmartMedia cards, giving it added value for those who utilize other non-CD portable MP3 players like the Rio and Nomad.
Sound quality on both players was excellent, and both incorporate all of the standard CD player features, including EQ and multiple playback options. Each has an LCD screen displaying track numbers, times and mode icons. There's no ID3 tag display yet, but the Vertical Horizon staff assured us that it will be incorporated soon.
Each unit also includes 20 seconds of digital anti-shock protection to prevent CD skipping, and an infrared port for the possible future addition of a wireless remote control.
The real music to our ears was the pricing on these units, with the CD-only device expected to retail at around $120 U.S. and the SmartMedia-enabled device priced at about $150 U.S., not much more than many standard CD players on the market today.
Vertical Horizon expects to have the units in full production in the first half of this year. To keep up on this hot new product, visit VH's web site at http://www.evhi.com.

One better
Yeah, if only I had $800 to spend on a portable MP3 player...
Earth to Slashdot, come in Slashdot.
For my money ($200-$300) I'll pick up a portable CD MP3 player (I've only been waiting for one to be released for the past year and a half). The Pine SM-200C has a very yummy list of specs. According to this C|Net article it's supposed to come out this month.
Another player is Vertical Horizon's CP200. It's got fewer features but it's $100 cheaper. Unfortunatly the CP200 won't be released until "sometime before the end of first quarter next year".

Re:I agree, it's a little overboard....Yep, I must throw in my support here. I have about 3100 songs in MP3 format at home (10 gig) and I like almost ALL of them. The music I listen to is very much affected by my mood. My tastes range from punk/ska/rock/alternative/rap/hip hop/classical/classic rock/techno. Most of my stuff is music you'd never hear on the radio, and as somebody else who replied here said, often the entire album is great!
I have been thinking about picking up an Empeg Car player to throw all my stuff onto, but it's still way too expensive. This new 4 gig drive player may be just what I need. And my main use will be car playing, so I can use the cigarette lighter adapter.
There are also some cool players that will use MP3-CDs that are supposed to be shown off at comdex. Check out http://www.pineusa.com/ and http://www.evhi.com/.

Ack! I'm so excited!
Woo! I have been waiting, hoping, and sweating over a device like this! Although the article says you can store up to 100 mp3s on one cd, that's a little off. You can get ~11.5 hours of 128k encoded mp3s onto a 650mb cd-r/w, which, figuring an average of 4 minutes per song, is 172 songs.
I already have a bunch of mp3-cds made, and listen to them at work with Winamp all the time. I would LOVE to be able to use these cds in the car, or anywhere. Definitely worth the $300 to me.
There's also another one of these devices coming soon, called the Eclectic CP200, from Vertical Horizon, Inc. They're currently in a beta testing process. Check it out at http://www.evhi.com/ and click on the Portable one. Also, check out the way cool headphones with built rio-type mp3 player.
I wonder how exactly they expect the MP3-CD format to be. Sub-folder seperated by artist? Can you switch between playlists, or just folders, or just song-to-song? It sounds like it supports ID3 from the article.
Yes!! I'm excited.
Ian.
