Coincident Advertising
Funny, the ad that appeared on the comments page had some code P.S. Anyone remember the HCF instruction (halt and catch fire).

Re:the going rate
There are banners on
/.??
Oh yeah, that's right, I vaguely recall seeing one, before I added the following to my adblock list sever years ago (or so it seems):
http://.falkag.net/*
http://ads.odsn.com/*
I'm not sure if that was all, I'm looking in the list of blocks, and I seem to recall those being the ones, there might have been more/different ones though.
I've got about 75 different blocks, and it seems to clean up most of the internet.
(Email me if you want the list). -
Yahoo Advert on SlashdotI just made a comment in this thread, and when I hit submit, this ad popped up at the top of my page
http://a.as-us.falkag.net/dat/bgf/200506/10/hojoho jo0001aa(8).gifCatapult Your Career
Not sure if it's relevant, but the coincidence is worth mentioning.

I don't get any spam
I have a number email. (Here is where you fill in the rest)
OK, checking over my 1000 latest, there's a spam on:
2005-11-03
2006-01-10
Actually, the irony of the affair are slashdot's message notifications:
Oracle Web Services Manager enables you to secure and manage your Web Services and SOAs in a
non-intrusive manner. Add security and control over already-deployed J2EE and .NET Web Services
without modification. Download Oracle Web Services Manager for free today.

Damn man, is it for free too? Thanks big brother that you care for my interest!
In other spam news, the top thing now says DEVELOPER MARKETPLACE, which isn't removable with my zap bookmarklet, there was one thing before which you had to zap twice, and not to forget the flash ones which suck up 90%+ resouerches (seriously, my comp was crawling with 4 windows open with these).
Clicking "add your link here" we find
"Typical Slashdot viewer: OSTG Network users are often influential in their company's purchasing decisions."
"84% are directly involved in technology purchasing decisions made by their companies and responsible for an average of $523,000 in purchasing"
Really? Makes you wonder what the threat to opensource is, and it seems they forgot what that OSTG thing stands for already? -
Re:My reasons
Right on. I always install Adblock with Firefox or Mozilla. I haven't seen a pop-up or flash advertisement for months. They all seem to come from a few advertisers. Here is my adblock list:

Ad blocking 101
1. Get the Adblock Firefox extension at:
http://adblock.mozdev.org/
Install it and restart Firefox.
2. Use Firefox to visit www.slashdot.org, go to Tools > Adblock > List All Blockable Elements >
a) http://.falkag.net/*
b) http://.tacoda.net/* =I'm not sure if this is ad site, but the first one is for sure
3. Right-click and block individual image-type ads, if any. -
Re:Parent sounds like a Troll
Ad Blocking is where advertisements (e.g. http://a.as-us.falkag.net/dat/njf/104/slashdot/de
v elopers_p1_top_leaderboard.js) in websites are removed before the page is rendered for your eyes. This is essentially the old JunkBuster proxy built into the web-browser.
However, http://www.caminobrowser.org/ has this, and intelligent javascript filters, and it's Free Software.
