Re:I'd use it on my kids
Here you go. Enjoy...

Re:Mixed emotions ...
If you're in a noisy place where you can't hear the beep you probably shouldn't let your kid out of sight. Because you also won't hear him/her yelling "Let go! I don't want to go in the van!"
Most tools have a direction locator, too. See: http://www.familysafemedia.com/child_locator_finder.html

Re:Cleanflix, not Walmart
It's funny though, that no sex and no violence ALSO SELLS MOVIES. There is more than one type of customer, and this editing business fills the market of those people who don't want excessive nudity, vulgarity or violence.
But not to worry, these people can still watch movies the way that THEY decide, since Hollywood is being such a pain about it.
I don't particularly want to watch hollywood's trash, but people who do want edited movies can watch it on this dvd player:

Basically you transfer a file over a USB drive to the DVD player which loads up markers to skip offensive scenes and mute offensive words. There! They bought the original, unedited movie, but still get to watch it how they please. I'm sure the Hollywood directors would still be outraged. Perhaps they'll try to ban this next? -
Very well then
for each Telemarketer that calls, I will use an air horn hooked up to my telephone to blast the caller's eardrums who try to sell me something. After telemarketers start to go deaf, they will be fewer in numbers.
That or I will use this device to screen calls and use the star key to tell off any telemarketer that dares try to get through. I will make a custom recording for them, telling them to take me off their calling list and cuss them out in 6 different languages. English, Spanish, Hindi, Russian, Traditional Chinese, and German. -
The invisible elephant
Forget about Sony, HP, Matsushita, Apple, Dell, and Disney...
The porn industry, which releases 11,000 titles a year, will likely silently decide which format "wins" (previous slashdot coverage).
And some of the bigger porn houses are coming down on the side of Blu-ray because of its capacity advantage over HD-DVD. That the porn industry would have such an influence comes as no surprise to those who know just how big the industry really is. -
Re:Simple technological solution
This exist already. I don't know how it works, nor how efficient it is. I sure as hell won't be buying such a DVD player. I want it raw and uncut!

Predictably...... the response to this story is whining about censorship, demands for creative freedom, etc., when what people really mean is, "We want our smut!"
Quite a few Hollywood movies are otherwise excellent productions that have been ruined by the addition of gratuitous sex, nudity, violence, coarse language, and so on. Why? Hollywood believes that it sells. But the truth is that most people don't appreciate the garbage, and would go see movies without it, and would be just as entertained. That's why edited movies are so popular.
There are plenty of adults who prefer not to be exposed to unnecessary filth. Call us old-fashioned, uptight, naive. But the fact is that we're the ones holding the country together by raising good strong families.
And don't excuse the garbage that Hollywood pushes by saying that movies just mirror reality. If anything, they present a selective view of reality -- there is much more to life than sex and violence!
