Home brew is cool, but for geekless coffee shops..
... both FatPort and Surf and Sip offer "free hot spot" in a box solutions for cafes that don't want to charge for service. For what you would pay for one of these boxes, it's difficult to justify trying to do it yourself. And since FatPort and Surf and Sip have hardened these box down for use in their own networks, they'll provide adequate protection from Kazaa zealots and the new breed of wireless spammers.

Re:Think Air Conditioning
Yeah, when I arrived in Vancouver I was hunting around for a place to wifi while I was still staying in a dodgy hostel. I found a place called FatPort that sells wifi time by the hour, month, year, etc. I didn't really feel good about paying through the nose for it, so I went and grabbed some lunch... and on the way, I found a cafe that has free wi-fi. So, I never went back to FatPort.
I was talking to the cafe owner and we agreed that wi-fi is like a good view, or a washroom, or yeah, air-conditioning. You wear the cost, and it becomes part of the appeal of your place, another reason for people to eat/drink/hang out there. -
Some ideas. Two things come to mind:
There is a company that is doing this locally with excellent success.
Boils down to :
- Hand out restricted IP address via DHCP (or a real one)
- Notice that there is an HTTP get going down from the (as yet) un-authed client
- 302 them to the payment / auth page
- insert AAA voodoo here
- enable access via dynamic firewall rules
- 302 them to wherever they were going
I use this frequently when travelling and it works very very well
Their platform is available commercially and the software is based on compact BSD. -

Turn them into WiFi access points
Bell Canada has announced that they are converting some of their thousands of pay phones into 802.11 access points to extend their new WiFi service offering. WiFi-only companies like FatPort would be wise to follow suit. PayPhones are in the best possible locations for WiFi -- think AirPorts, hotel lobbies, train stations...

Re:Truely Quiet and CheapHere is a similar story about the same hardware, from a Vancouver company called FatPort.
They're using them as wireless AP/Gateways...

Re:$40/mo unlimited for 19.2?
Doesn't going Wi-Fi make more sense? I've had experience with getting a Zaurus to work at about 1.5 Mbps on FatPort's system. Way higher bandwidth - if you really need it with your PDA

Whew! These marketing guru's need a raise!
Isnt FatPort releasing CompactBSD sorta like Tony Little selling Krispy Kremes?

Canada's Cheap Broadband
Up here in Vancouver, I get a 3Mbps DSL line with 640Kbps upstream for CDN$35/month -- that's about US$25. Or I could choose 4Mbps cable for CDN$40. Or get wireless service from a company like FatPort (www.fatport.com).
