Firearms modSimilar thing happened to a HL mod called Firearms a few years ago. From the remains of their website:
The same can't be said for the Firearms 2 Team, who kicked off their mod in August 2005 by hijacking the Firearms Forums, FTP, and servers using back-door access supplied by our server provider, ReconGamer. Every single team member and most of the forum admin/mod staff were banned, and we lost all of our art source and personal files stored on the server.
From what I can remember, ReconGamer was providing free or very cheap hosting to the mod. A prominent community member emailed them asking for passwords using a similar scheme and they fell for it. -
Re:Don't complain about performance...
You cannot snipe people with pistols.
That's not quite true. You can place a mini-scope onto a pistol to turn it into a miniture sniper rifle. Half-life's Firearms Mod does this with the Colt Anaconda (if you have the Marksmanship skill). A person I know who plays the game uses the Colt Anaconda along with one other weapon (G36E, but I'm not sure).
This Anaconda isn't as powerful as the dedicated sniper rifles, but can be used for sniping the opposing team. -
Girls in FireArmsMod
I play the firearmsmod for halflife... and I clan with [PoP]. While I admit we're nowhere near a group of average on-line gamers (Average Age is 30.5 I believe) we do have a husband wife team playing shoot-em ups.
But, men, note this lesson well. Not only do women camp incredibly well, they're much better at gloating than we are. : )
FAMod tends to be about territorial control, so camping isn't quite what it is in some mods... go, read up, /. Firearmsmod.com -
Re:What about the fall of CS?
Coming from one who plays another HL mod, Firearms, there is something I find even more amazing about cheating. Even with options out there to help prevent cheaters, like Cheating-Death, people would rather bitch about the cheaters than play on servers which require such programs. Talk about wanting to have your cake and eat it too....

Re:Only the best games ever!
I much prefer the feel of Half-life, and the numerous mods. For any fans of Rainbow Six, try FireArms Mod I haven't gotten Half life to work 100% in linux; I can play single play w/ OpenGL and it's very fast-- but the display screws up when i create a network game: The main menu get stuck there, so I can see my gun and walk around, shoot, but i just can't see in front of me... very annoying. If anyone has gotten halflife to work well, please post your details, command line options, etc. I used a cvs build of wine, latest nvidia drivers, debian unstable, etc.

storylines in games, bleh
When I think about what makes a a particular game fun to play, I think very little of the storyline. For most of the FPS games that people play nowadays, the storyline is just something we notice taking up space on the screen while waiting to connect to a multiplayer server. We'll take halflife for example. The reason the original halflife game didn't flourish was because of the story line getting in the way of the gameplay. It seemed every 5 minutes you would have to stop and wait for a character to talk to you for information on how do complete the mission. But if you look at all of the sucessful halflife mods out there (counterstrike, firearms, paintball), It shows that the creation of the halflife engine was a great success, and that is why halflife was game of the year for the past few years. So depending on the target audience, games with really strong storylines dont fly well with the FPS game movement.

Re:Its about Multi-Player.
I beg to differ. Computer games need the multi-player game just as much as the single-player game. You mention Half-Life, which I'll do now. It's got an amazing single-player game and had a decent multi-player. Sure, it wasn't great but, deathmatches aren't good at all (in my opinoin). But, it must have had something good in it because now it is the most highly played game in the world. There are more Counter-Strike players alone than combining all UT & Q3A players. And that's just Counter-Strike. There is also TFC to account for, adding another 1,000 servers easily to the list.
Now, compare the above statement about Half-Life's multi-player to Q3A's or UT's. They're both DM's. Sure, there's CTF and Domination and Assault in UT but, it's still almost all DM. Q3A is starting to come out with some good MODs like q3f and WFA. Now, compare Half-Life's already established MODs. Counter-Strike, TFC, and the rising Firearms. This should be enough proof that Half-Life's multi-player is by far, superior.
Id software can make a good multi-player game as can be seen in Q3A. They can also make a good single-player game as can be seen in almost all of Id's other games. Hopefully, Id software will put the two together to make one outstanding game.
Have a nice day,
