Re:Effective by design
Although it doesn't have to do with books or piracy, Ian Rogers has an interesting speech about "effective by design." His mantra is similar- those who embrace the scalability of the web instead of try to create scarcity will be the ones that profit.
I feel it isn't ground breaking, but his little thing on physics really put into words what I've been feeling for a long time. Worth a read. -

Re:Call me crazy, but...Every one seems to have missed that the Yahoo Music Engine is not just a music service, but is also a jukebox.
It does support the iPod as lond as you use non DRMed MP3s or even AACs. See this screenshot.
It's only buying DRM tracks from a music store that "locks" you in to a player. If you buy your CDs online and rip them yourself you probably end up saving money and don't have any DRM issues.

Message from Beastie Boys campHey all, I've worked with Beastie Boys since 1994 or so (used to run their web site once upon a time, did a couple of tours with them) and have been following this matter. See my reply to Cory's original Boing Boing post:
http://boingboing.net/2004/06/11/new_beasties_dis
c _ha.htmlSomeone please tell me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the copy protection is *only* on non-US and non-UK discs. I also believe that this protection is "EMI policy", and nothing specific to Beastie Boys' disc.
I can tell you for a FACT that Beastie Boys didn't want this and fought against it, but lost this battle with their label.
We encourage you to buy a non-protected US or UK disc. We understand that in today's world Slashdotters are going to do whatever it is they usually do to get music, and this post isn't going to change that. But when we've done so much progressive work in this space over the last 10 years it sucks to see a Slashdot post claiming we're "Evil".
See you at the live shows, ian

the LOTR phat beatsLords of the Rhymes:
I'm Gimli and I'm a fuckin' dwarf
Killin' motherfuckers from the south to the north
That's not Mirkwood I'm chopping with my battle axe
And I'm on an orc stampede like ShadowfaxI think things like this need to be encouraged as much as possible. They have an MP3 download. And they also sample the immortal Ballad of Bilbo Baggins by Leonard Nimoy.
