Hardly Uncommon
I'm an anonymous Fort Bend ISD student. I have found so much private/personal information, both on students and faculty, that it would make your cringe and probably embarass quite a few people here. I even have found grades.
The file shares are left open and easy to get in to as a regular user. Commonly, there are many accounts on each school's NT domain server that have 'Administrator' privileges, sometimes unintentionally (I think it is the default group membership when you add users or something). Each computer plugged into the school network that authenticates against that domain server can be easily breached - you can access any computers C$ share. Through this, I was able to get into the computers of principals and teachers.
Just a little tidbit of information for FBISD residents and students who would like to know how well their hundreds of millions of dollars in tax hikes are being used. This isn't hacking some obsucre exploit, this is incompetency by FBISD staff IT (MCSE toting idiots) department. -
Re:Work is Work, but what about School Blogging
Assuming we are talking about a publically funded institution, then there is a pretty clear support for the free speech of students.
I ran a website critical of my school district while I was in high school. They did all sort of things to try to shut me out. First, they tried to guess at my passwords to make entry into my server. Then they sent their lawyers to my website (detected when I saw their IP's in my server log and discovered they belonged to an area law firm that our school district retains). Then they tried to concoct various fake stories about how I have violated various technology resources policies to get disciplinary action taken on me (nothing happened of it). Then, the started randomly disabling my account on the NT domain controller so I couldn't log in to the school network.
I think the only reason why they didn't try anything more sinister like tampering with my grades or records is that there were alot of people in high places, including media, who were pretty much watching everything unfold.
The school district in question is Fort Bend ISD in suburban Houston, TX. There are numerous other incidents where district employees tried to squelch dissenting speech, including police intimidation of parents seeking records under FOIA, suspending employees didn't support increasing school taxes, and in one case, firing a school employee for blowing the whistle on a principal who was fudging records.
Basically, the key for students is to never let down. The law is in favor of free student speech and organizations like the ACLU will come down fast and furious in the courts if they do anything to students. -
Re:Computer Security
I don't think it helps much that the web development staff can't seem to spell either (notice where the Technology Department is)...

Re:Pssst, look here!!!
Hey.
I operate a website that criticizes our local school system.
We have similar censorship policies in Fort Bend ISD and I have set up CGI-Proxy accounts for people in the past so they could access totally appropriate websites that were wrongly blocked.
Anyway, I'd like your permission to use your story as a front page article. You do a really excellent job demonstrating the ignorance and total disregard for students that these administrators have for us.

I tried to be helpful
My school distrist, Fort Bend ISD in Houston, TX, had an IIS webserver that was infected with W32.SadMind. I notified the admin by email who replied with "Uhh.. the server is too slow to run Norton.. so we cant do anything". I laughed and forgot about it for a year.
Then comes a story on slashdot about infected IIS servers, I post a quip about my dealings with FBISD and a couple of Slashdot posters decided to email the district and the local TV station. THAT got it fixed within a day, however the school district was a bit upset at me.
After than, some less than ethical FBISD employee decided to attempt to reset my dyndns.org account password. A while later, I get hits from them to my linux box trying to login to my FTP and protected HTTP pages from them. This is the thanks I get for telling them that they're vulnerable.
As a student, I couldn't really do anything other than publicize what they did on my website and send a few nastygrams back. -
Re:Hmmm... Old-School Mindset
Exactly right! High School is depressing to me because I'm not learning anything by going to school seven hours a day with some boneheaded Education major "teaching" a class.
My school has an AP Computer Science class. The textbook is the most pitiful book I have ever read. Its written by some idiot named Schram. It was often wrong and it was hard to read (because he obviously doesnt know what he is talking about).
Crappy books and teachers are a major problem with public school. Something needs to be done.
