It's javascript not java, so your browser version matters, something with a JIT compiler from the last 6 months will probably be able to display it at 30+fps (except Chrome, it doesn't render at all in either current or beta).

Ahh, gotcha. Yea my RHEL5 system is running Firefox 3, my WinXP box is running Firefox 4.

    System 2 - WinXP 1 C2D cpu, 4g RAM - Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U22 - 35-45fps
System 2 wins. Graphics card unimportant as this isn't a 3D accellerated application. Not sure why the discrepancy is what it is, but whatever.

ASCAP is as evil as the RIAA.

Hardly. ASCAP serves a very, very useful purpose. They protect the small guy from having their songs ripped off, mostly by the RIAA. If you put together a track of two trash cans banging together to a beat and get it registered with ASCAP, and ASCAP finds out that someone (be it bar owner, RIAA or any other band) is using that track in live performances, they will battle for you to get your licensing fees.

ASCAP is usually just the messenger. They don't normally go around trying to find songs being performed that are not in the public domain, they are usually tipped off about it by someone claiming they are owed licensing fees.

In this particular case, I wouldn't be surprised if the RIAA were involved as the person "tipping them off".

Shakespeare is a bad analogy. His original works are not protected by any copyright law (or protected in any way, really). Hence the stupid "Hamlet 2" movie coming out.

Or is that to just avoid paying royalties? Copyright law both scares and confuses me at times.

But if I wanted to put on a play of Romeo & Juliet in my back yard using sock puppets and sell the copies of my obvious masterpiece on eBay, I would be able to retain 100% of the money because his work isn't protected anymore. However, if I based my sock puppet masterpiece off of, say, the DiCaprio version, I'd be sued royally.
