Re:English DOC
In addition, the original press release can be read here: http://www.francetelecom.com/fr/espaces/journalis
t es/communiques/CP_old/cp060725.html. It says that about 100 homes are connected. -
bad reporting
The article doesn't imply that France Telecom is offering a 2,5 Gbits/s Internet connexion, just that the link that connects the customer to the FT network is 2,5 Gbits/s.
FT uses this link to provide Phone, TV, Internet. The article does not say what is the Internet bandwidth that is offered to the customer.
According to the news, the new service is offered in a few select cities of Paris Region.
In fact, the service isn't commercially available. It's only a pilot experiment, only about one hundred of people are concerned.
And finally this is old news, from january:

Re:More Microsoft Innovation!
Yup, nothing truly exists until Microsoft 'Innovates' it into existence. Nope, nobody ever thought of sending video over IP until today, thank God Microsoft is out there inventing the future for us.
Yup, in Microsoft world, nothing exist until THEY "invent" it.
I mean, nothing that french ISPs do counts...
Ah... the wonderful world of Microsoft...
By the way, on the internet connection and service side, the US is really backward. In Europe, you can get ADSL (ADSL2+ up to 20Mbps) + IPTV + VOIP for 30euros/month. Wish i could get that here... -
Triple-play services in Europe
Actually, according to France Telecom, DSL was invented in BellCore Labs in 1987.
:)
Telcos in France, Germany, Britain and Belgium have been quicker off the mark than the USA in developing and rolling out "triple-play" services over DSL though. -
It's been done, two years ago
In France, the Research and Development dept of France Telecom has been doing this since 2002.
Here's some nice flash presentation, some documentation and a PDF
And they use H263+ and G722 ! -
Re:hahaha!

How is this different from the french one?
Even france telecom has developed something like this called 'Exhalia' last year. Now, if these devices could generate any odour.. Imagine the possibility that hackers could use it generate pungent rotten egg odour just to prove their skills - something equivalent to defacing websites. -
There's a fix already?!
"The Association said an upgrade to the A5/2 encryption algorithm, available since July 2002, addresses the security weaknesses highlighted by the Israelis."
Okay...The networks can issue new SIMs and update their switches. If they're soft switches, then it should be all the easier of an upgrade. Those of you who have GSM network operators (like Orange, BT, FT, T-Mobile), petition them to take this fix seriously. You pay for a service that they advertise as being secure. However, if you were worried about lawful conversation intercepts, there's already something in place to support this (refer to ETSI TS 101671).
