Find out Saturday
The first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day. It's a great time to sample a variety of comics and styles for all ages. Expose your son to a wide variety of options and gauge his reactions accordingly when making further buying decisions. This year's collections include multiple Spider-Man titles, the first issue of Superman Family Adventures (which is a STRONG candidate), Atomic Robo (one of the best, and truly "all ages"; think Pixar on the comic book page) and more. Every reader is different, so find out on May 5 and cater to him.

I "second" Owly - also "Free Comic Book Day"!I'd also recommend "Korgi" from Top Shelf.
However: this Saturday is "National Free Comic Book Day" in the US and parts of the world. Be sure to visit a local comic book store. Or a library - some have special events. One year, our local library actually had some of the Top Shelf authors/artists on-site. They made recommendations based on interests and age, and even signed the issues they were handing out.

Re:free as in beer!
Well, I live in Canada, so I guess it doesn't matter anyway. There should be an effort to turn this into an international event, rather that just an American one...
It is. There are participating stores worldwide, it's just more prolific and the states and Canada (the site mentions "North America and around the world"). Their store locator even works with Canadian addresses (whereas I had to go through a couple of menus to find out I need to sit on a bus for 3 hours to get a free comic...). -
Re:"Nationwide"? For what values of 'nation'?
Nationwide Canada, as well. The website allows you to search by zip and postal code to find supporting stores. http://www.freecomicbookday.com/fcbd_locator.asp

10. Is this just happening in the U.S.?
Any comic book store in the world can participate in Free Comic Book Day, although there may be some limitations on which titles are available in which countries due to licensing and other considerations. If you want your local store to get involved, let them know!

Of course, there are people in the web published arena getting their own interests involved.
Also, isn't Free Comic Book Day coming up soon? (May 3)
Perhaps a Comics Week should be declared? -
Something to do after the movie
Ultimate Spider-Man issue #1 will be one of the free books being handed out on Free Comic Book Day. It's the fourth comic book down at the website (alongside JLA Adventures, Tomb Raider and a Star Wars pre-AoTC comic.)
Ultimate Spider-Man is an amazing comic book. It's a retelling of the classic story for a newer generation. It's a great jumping on point for any new reader. Plus, now, it's free =)
Oh... you can also read the rest of the series for free in Flash format at Marvel's dot.Comics site.

Re:Killing Wolverine AND A FREE COMIC BOOK
Uh, you don't have to go far to find another method of killing Wolverine....
Drop by your local comic store this weekend to pick up your FREE COMIC BOOK. While there, you could also pick up Wolverine #175 -- the most recent -- for another possible answer debated in this thread.
(I'm trying not to lone-gunmen-are-dead the ending, but I think I'm failing miserably) -
