    (I was going to post this as an "AskSlashdot"...but here's as good of a place as any....)

    The problem with the original question is that it's posted as an either/or option. Unfortunately, we deal with a mix of electronic and printed documents -- and you're like me you've paid for some of them in both formats.

    My "AskSlashdot" is this:

    1. Is there a cost-effective way of moving existing dead-tree documents into either HTML, PDF, or another searchable mixed text and graphics format?

    I'll buy new documents in electronic *searchable* format when I can. For example, O'Reilly's Networking Bookshelf is easily worth the price I paid since I can now search it -- and everything else I have -- easily.

    Yet, I have a four foot wide stack of technical documents and books that just isn't going to come with me on each plane trip. I'm not going to get rid of them -- they are still valuable -- but I have this creeping feeling that they would be more useful if they were searchable all the time...not just when I think of a specific text.

    The available tools for capturing paper and converting it into searchable PDFs is costly, and is geared toward corporations that can justify the costs by the number of users. To me, a per-use licence of Adobe's Capture --

    -- is just not cost effective.

    If the document is already a text document -- even if it's in some wordprocessor I don't use -- generating PDF files is easy and cheap;

    Print a document to a Postscript file, or create one. For example a simple text document is trivial;

    1. enscript file.txt -p file.ps

    Convert the resulting Postscript file to PDF;

    1. ps2pdf file.ps file.pdf

    Converting a paper document to PDF is also easy. Just scan the image and use tiff2ps or jpeg2ps to create the Post script file. The only problem is that the resulting PDF is a bitmap image and isn't searchable.

    So, if you want it done, you're back to paying Adobe for Capture or some other nearly as expensive method.

    Tell me I'm wrong...please!

    bots get arround the policy the same way that the people offering copyrighted material get arround it. The point is that Napster really just doesn't care.

    Perhaps Napster doesn't care, or perhaps it is only technically feasible for Napster to detect a bot as obvious as one that sits in chat and annoys everyone.

    Napster is just a pain in the butt to use.

    What color is the sky in your world? If you can write a script in 15 minutes how the hell can you have a problem using Napster's client? It's butt simple and if still you don't like it try gnapster for linux (which rocks). If you have a problem with finding or d/l songs you probably just need more bandwidth.

    Hmmm. Let me think about this. I guess in many ways you're right. But is it really a *need* to run Windows software, or is it just a comfort-zone thing? Most people are now comfortable with Windows, and a lot of them don't see it's obvious bugs as a reason to change over. It all has to do with perceived reality/actual reality. Tech savvy people are more inclined to get to the guts of things - the under-reality, rather than the flashy illusion that is Windows. But for most people, this isn't the case.

    We're not only talking about office software here

    Ok, I agree about the utilities to a certain point, but even that's not a total argument. Freshmeat is a prime example of small utils that you're talking about, usually with full source code too.

    I think where WINE could really come in handy is for entertainment and esoteric software. I mean, look at the multitude of games for Windows, if WINE managed to get up to a level where it could run most of those without a problem, it would be an extreme boon Linux and other UNIX platforms. but besides games and some very specialized software, I think that UNIXen are most of the way there already:

    As for the Office software, Sun Microsystems has an Office Suite called Sun StarOffice. It's the only Dot Com Office Suite around. What is a Dot Com office suite? Simple. An Office Suite with unrivaled power and usability, which allows you to do everything at the same place. It runs on a variety of platforms, including Linux, and the ultra-stable Solaris(tm) platform. What makes the Solaris platform unique? It's scalable, reliable, and proven. It runs on both Intel and the more robust SPARC platforms. With the functionality of StarOffice, so with the robustness of the Solaris platform and the multitude of free and commercial software available, the only thing that really seems to be missing is Game titles. Databases are there. Enterprise support is there. Business applications are getting there very fast. Looks like a bright future for Linux and Open source in general, especially now that major players in the industry like Sun Microsystems have released their own Open Source licenses.

    I can't understand it and many other people can't understand it either! You're just making things unnecessary difficult.

    And because YOU don't understand perl, it shouldn't be done? We should NEVER create any new programming languages because YOU (or your friends) don't know it already?? Yes, I'm aware of many problems perl can cause but if you have ever used it for text manipulation you wouldn't hate it so much.

    Just like the GNU coding standards say: use only C, not C++. This rules should also be extended to Perl, Python and other inferior languages.

    Again, please show me how easily you can generate part of HTML page (plain text source) on the fly and perhaps join/replace some strings on the way using C. After that I'll show the same in perl. Lets see how much time/code lines it takes for each implementation.

    But for web pages I think we cannot use client side perl because we wouldn't be any better than those authors that use BASIC or some other non-standard client-side scripting in web pages. You know idea behind HTML is that you are not required to use some specified browser - we all love lynx and w3m anyway.

    Maybe we still get good text editor on top of Mozilla (I would love to use REAL perl syntax in search/replace/macros in text editor). Security issues should be solved first - we don't need outlook-like-viruses for Mozilla.

    As someone who recently spent 2 weeks converting his entire collection of CDs (200+) to MP3, I have to say that I agree with you.

    In fact, once I got around to that, I started broadcasting them through live365.com (if you read the fine print, it appears that Live365 has a deal with ASCAP) so I could listen to my whole collection at work without lugging around a hard drive. And then I wrote an open source program to do broadcasting automatically.

    So far, my MP3 experience has been very good for all parties involved. ASCAP gets their money from Live365 so I can legally broadcast, Live365 gets their money through banner ads and special high-bandwidth deals (there's usually at least a couple thousand people listening at any given tim), I get to listen to my collection at work, I get to give back to the community whose software I've used happily and often (and maybe even get some press!), and it's a *hell* of a lot more portable than 200 CDs.

    Unfortunately, there is no easy way for Napster and the such to prove that you own the album you're downloading. It's just way too open for piracy, and that makes it hard to defend. Napster doesn't pay ASCAP for every song downloaded. The people downloading are the ones that are *actually* liable, but since when has that stopped a juicy lawsuit in the good ol' U. S. of A?

    I'm with the "Open Source Leaders", it's morally bad to steal, but in the long run, unless artists and labels start cooperating, they're going to lose all control.

    If you don't properly typecast it's sloppy programming.. yes, the compiler may upcast it for you but I wouldn't count on it. And you're right, I have no clue on how to program.

    There is much out there for you.
    There are some PHP and Perl.
    Most require an SQL server but some (like mine) do not.

    The issues to look at how much load do you want to handle, how much power do you want and how complex are you willing to put up with.

    Slashcode is very powerful and handles the load quite nicely but isn't very easy...

    You said power isn't an issue so there is likely to be a good system that handles the load and is very easy.

    My own code is very powerful and very easy but with a load it gose up and down like a yoyo... It's also still in dev...
    Not the sort of thing you want on a tech support page.

    We had to do something very similar to this. Basically we just modified the wwwboard.cgi script at Matts Script Archive. But I agree with several posts made earlier, there are Lots of similar programs like the one you're looking for at Freshmeat Good Luck!

    Depending on the license they released it under, I doubt you would want to reuse any of it. Not to mention that it's pretty old and there are lots of GPL'd equivilents (that don't use cold fusion). A quick search on freshmeat turns up 17 different web based forums and I'd bet that's only a small amount of the ones availiable.

    Am I missing something? does this Allaire system have some special feature?

    If it's practical for your system, why not try squid_redirect? It's easy to set up, and you can block/redirect any number of URLs so that you (almost) never see banners or advertising images again. It comes with a pretty good list of URLs, and adding to them is just a regex away...

    Yes, I know that some people might consider this to be "stealing" content from site, where "payment" is the viewing of banners, but I can live with that :) NZ is a long way away as the IP flies.

    You only notice how many of these there are around when you block them with a nice image of tux or similar.

    This is ridiculous. If I was on that list, I would most certainly not create a new account. I would never use Napster again. I would also never buy another Metallica record again (not that I have in years).

    If you were one of the people whose account was cancelled, do yourself a favor: Don't use Napster. They obviously don't want you as a user. Here's some more advice: Don't buy anything by Metallica. They obviously don't want you as a fan. Go buy some Limp Bizkit, even if you don't like them; they will never try to dictate what you can do with something you paid money for. Go buy some Grateful Dead, even if you don't like them, for the same reason.

    Do you know how to program? Help with the OpenNap project. If you can't program, support them any way you can: Download it and run an opennap server.

    Fred Lavigne (http://fred.lavigne.com/) has
    written a Swing Look And Feel class that uses
    gtk themes. Its not perfect, but it works.

    He also has some code (independent of that)
    that implements some GTK/Gnome features in java.

    Unfortunately, the site isn't coming up in my DNS right now...but look up SkinLF on freshmeat. I wrote some code on top of that which will look at the local .gtkrc file and load up the default gtk theme.

    No, the Netscape Communicator 4.72 is still based on Motif.

    The Preview Release 1 of Netscape 6 (which does use GTK) is full of bugs and mostly unusable (I was unable to post a software announcement to Freshmeat due to problems with forms, that renders it unusable)

    Mozilla and Netscape are different things. Mozilla was Netscape, gone under heavy development, and now Mozilla is part of Netscape, but Mozilla will continue to be released independently.

    And the Motif trouble is not only on GNU/Linux, but every Unix. Until Netscape higher or equal to 6.0 is released and becomes standard, and all platforms replace old Netscapes for the new one (the 3.0 to 4.x change took a lot of time), it will still be around.

    Motif should be dead, we all would like it to be dead, but still has lots of strings attached, it the zombie will still be smelling funny around for some time.

    My advice, if you don't want package managers, would be to avoid RedHat like the plague. Avoid Debian. Use Slackware, or use the Linux From Scratch resources to make your own distribution. This route is guaranteed to make you happy (in the long run, at least), but is significantly more difficult than just installing an "established" distribution.

    Freshmeat has had a few editorials on package managers, incidentally, like The Universal Source Package, which might be of interest to you.
