Strong N-Gage Launch Claimed, Figures Disagree
Khyl'Dran writes "According to Gamesindustry.biz, "The first official statement from Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia on the launch of its N-Gage game deck has claimed that the device is sold out at many retailers following a 'very positive' consumer response." However, 1UP have posted US sales figures which reveal "...less than 5,000 units of Nokia N-Gage hardware were sold in the United States in the system's first week of release", after reported sales of 500 units in the UK following launch, and 1UP argue a "...rough comparison [point] would be to the Game Boy Advance, which sold 540,000 units in its first week of availability in the United States." -
UK Retailers Report Disappointing N-Gage Sales
Thanks to GamesIndustry.biz for their article indicating that UK videogame retailers are showing extremely low sell-through of Nokia's new N-Gage game deck in its launch week. Although US sales figures are still pending, "fewer than 500 units [were] sold by the 6,000 [UK] game stores polled by Chart-Track." GI.Biz note that, though "these figures don't include sales from mobile phone stores, which might well be expected to shift a few units of the N-Gage, they still spell out something of a setback for Nokia's ambitions in the console space", since "Nintendo's Game Boy Advance hardware outsold the N-Gage by a ratio of almost 30:1." -
GameCube $99 Price Drop Now Official
Michael_Blessed writes "An MCV story confirms the official GameCube price drop to $99, effective tomorrow. Strangely, this brings it to a similar pricepoint as the GameBoy Advance..." There's an official press release over at Yahoo which clarifies that the deal includes no bundled games, but "opens an $80 price advantage over its two console competitors", and quotes NOA President, George Harrison, as saying "So far in 2003, Nintendo GameCube is the only home console showing an increase in unit sales compared to 2002." We reported on Amazon's ahead-of-time price drop yesterday. -
Sony To Release PSP Handheld Console In 2004
JayBonci writes "According to News.com, in a news conference before this year's E3, Sony announced its plans to release a new gaming handheld called PSP, slated for release late next year. Presumably, this would be to compete against Nintendo's Gameboy Advance, a clear winner in the handhelds department for years now. The games come on a new media format, half the size of a CD or DVD, holding 1.8 gigs. Other Gameboy competitors such as the Neo-Geo Pocket Color have suffered from small game libraries and the inability to get over the GBC/GBA's entrenched marketshare. Despite all of this, Sony isn't SNK, and obviously has a lot of muscle to push its way to where it wants to be. It will be an interesting fight." -
Transflective Laptop Screens?
Ed_Moyse writes "It's a beautiful sunny day here in Geneva, and I've just been outside, enjoying a game of Advance Wars on my GBA. What I'd enjoy even more is to be able to work outside. Does anyone know why reflective laptop screens don't exist? It'd save battery life and should (if the GBA is any guide) work indoors too. Geeks with tans!" Timothy points out that what this reader is probably looking for is a transflective display, not a reflective display. The difference is that transflective laptops don't depend on ambient light, because they can be selectably backlit. Anyone who has ever used a laptop outside will know the advantages this may provide over your traditional LCD screen.
