Re:What a dumb name
There is Gamers 4 Croydon that was a political party that was sitting in a few seats in the South Australian election.
They were created to lobby for R18+ rating for video games. They did not get a lot of votes but raising the issue has finally introduced the rating in Australia. -
Sad result for Gamers4Croydon
It wasn't a great election result for Gamers4croydon, who were standing against the Attorney General on the platform of allowing R18+ ratings. They only received 3.7% of the vote. In fact, there were more informal (or invalid) votes at 5%.
Still, they will be happy with the final outcome, even if it wasn't a victory for grass roots campaigning.

Political action
I encourage every member of Slashdot to donate to Gamers 4 Croydon. Gamers for Croydon is a political party running against atkinson in his home seat in an attempt to raise awareness about the R18+ restriction on games and to oppose mandatory internet filtering. Seriously, go donate and spread the word

Re:The guy's right
There is a gamer party running against him in his electorate. http://www.gamers4croydon.org/. This is why he's trying to discredit gamers so desperately.

Someone did.

Re:The guy's right
I do have to say that the motorcycle gangs have a better long term plan than the gamers do at this point. Someone should start a gamer party and run for election on the grounds that you actually know something about what you're trying to regulate.
Gamers are also running a candidate in Mr Atkinsons electorate - http://www.gamers4croydon.org/
Also, Mr Atkinson is a state attorney general (not the federal one). As a SAG, he forms part of the committee of attorneys general, which must form a consensus in order to change the classification system. As the only AG against the R18+ rating for games, he's out of touch with the other states AG's and the only person stopping the change from happening.

Re:The guy's right
Ooooohhhhh. you mean like this political party? oh, wait, that's the site for the party of gamers that are running against Atkinson.
But if it's not in the article, it mustn't be true! Gamers are clearly all stalking Atkinson and completely eschew the political process! -
Re:The guy's right
You mean like Gamers for Croydon

gamers4croydon; Atkinson bans computer games also
SA Attorney-General Michael Atkinson has been the driving force behind moves to ban certain computer games from Australia for a long time. This dude is just bad news.
There is an organisation called Gamers for Croydon, who are locked in a feud with him him and his policies.
gamers4croydon, have a political candidate who will be standing against Atkinson for the seat of Croydon (in Adelaide) next election.
If your interested in the politics of games, checkout their website at http://www.gamers4croydon.org/
They have a steam group also

Re:Games are not just for kids anymore!
It almost makes me ashamed to live in the same state as him.

Re:I don't think Michael Atkinson will stand for t
Gamers 4 Croydon are running a candidate against Michael Atkinson in the next election for the Croydon seat. Vote for them if you really want to see an R18+ rating in Australia.
-
Re:I don't think Michael Atkinson will stand for t
Correct - public level consultation won't change anything.
The commonwealth still needs to get the unanimous approval of all states and territories and Atkinson has already started that he will never support the introduction of an R18+ classification.
He's made it an election promise and unfortunately it's almost certain that he will be re-elected (The seat of croydon is overwhelming in it's support for labor).
http://www.gamers4croydon.org/ are a group starting a party specifically to campaign on this issue - give them your support!

Re:Good
When Australians decide to start acting like adults they can do something about their government.
Whatever do you mean?
Do you mean that this is something the Australian public wants? That nothing is being done?
Or perhaps you are one of those nuts that believes that if we are not violent nothing will be done. I'd like to remind you that all those guns did not stop an extremely invasive surveillance law being put into place by the previous US government.
Because you are an ignorant troll, you do not actually know what is happening. Right now the R18 rating is being held up by one man, the South Australian Attorney General Michael Atkinson. All the other state Attorney Generals voted yes on R18 for games. Australian law in this case requires a complete consensus, not a majority (this prevents the State AG's from removing or changing existing classifications as well). There are already campaigns to remove Michael Atkinson from his seat of Croydon in the 2010 elections such as the Gamers4Croydon organisation.
Please mod the parent troll, if possible ignorant as well.
