Re:Hey, whose side are they on?
Just so everyone is on the same page here... high power rocketry ain't no toy. I used to do this years ago, but it got too expensive. I'm thinking about going back though. You have always had to get certified from NAR or Tripoli to get the big stuff, the feds just decided to crash the party. I can see why they are doing it, but I am sure they are going to fuck things up as usual. If you are in the LA area check out lucerne lake bed on the 2nd saturday of the month. Google for it.

Cool videos.
These guys were mentioned on
/. several months ago. They have been doing launches with video cameras for a while. The videos are very impressive. -
Temporary Slashdot effect?Looks like the Gates Bros. Rocketry from last months story is still down.

Perhaps "temporarily" now means "not while Slashdot still has a link to it"?

Don't forget rockets!
There are also plenty of people who take pictures and/or videos from high-power rockets as well - and I'm not talking about the cheap Estes camera rockets. The preferred way to get still-shots is to use a decent-enough "point-and-shoot" with auto-advance, and wire a timer to the contacts of the button which takes the picture, although others use a servo to actuate the button, like this example.
It seems like even more people take videos, however - everything from a tiny "X10"-style camera with a transmitter to the full monty, where multiple digital video cameras are mounted inside the rockets. One of the founders of Xircom, Dirk Gates, has some very high-quality DV videos of his rocket flights at http://gbrocketry.com/movie_theater.htm. -
Until this shows up - check out GBR!While you're waiting for the NASA stuff - Check these guys out:
The Gates brothers flies some of the coolest rockets in HPR today, and they have hands-down the best video.
/August, especially likes the pad-cams and any staging separations. -
